These radios are for short range personal use where permitted to be able to reach the other party. If you want to talk great distance become an Amateur radio operator--it is easy to get licensed. It comes with 1 NiMH rechargeable battery pack but can also be used with 3 AA batteries. It may not float with some AA batteries. These statements are from the User's Guide downloaded from Motorola. I have not tried using AA batteries.

I purchased as a gift to use on our cruise. We couldn't hear. And they aren't cheap. I don't know I'd recommend if your sole purpose is to use on cruise.

Has VOX but pretty annoying for handheld use; if you hit the PTT button, the VOX function is cancelled and has to be reactivated. Might be better if you have a headset or something (which would make them no longer waterproof), but if you bumped a button the VOX would stop working.

That is referring to a marine radio. These are not marine radios, and cannot communicate with any other marine radios, so no, it does not have channel 16 hailing.

Yes, mine lasted about 6 months of normal weekend use. Rechargeable AA's are the way to go. I use the included charging cradles as just holding stands now.

I think you would be able to feel as long as it is in an inside pocket. I had it in a thick hunting jacket pocket and could tell when it vibrated.
