It was a little confusing for me as well. Just place your hand behind the center of the outside plate (on the outside), and then with the other hand push the round spring loaded plate back to meet with your hand. This is exactly what I bought it for. It worked fine for me, and unlike flash didn't wake my grandson up. In all fairness it is not as bright as a flash, but newborns aren't moving that fast so the slower shutter speed does not hurt.

it shouldn't be too bright because it has a filter cloth so your not being lit up by the bulb directly
