They come together. I found it easy to program for my needs and I am not that good at this type of stuff usually. Just make sure when you put the chest band on, you wet it on the inside of the part that has the transmitter so it conducts properly.

Without the strap you'd be using a watch to give you the time, day of the week and day of the month (but not the month itself). Thats it. The strap sends the watch your heart rate which is used to give you all the data once your are done exercising.

Men's, one size for the wristwatch. The adjustable chest strap came in medium. My experience with them is they relax with age, needing a bit of adjustment every couple of months. A particularly small or big person might need a different strap size. The Polar site sells them.
