The glass ones implode. If you asked me at first I would have said the reports of imploding are user error. They are not. Ours imploded after less than a year with no abuse. see less

If you had asked me up til last week I would have said people who had them imploded were user error, eg shocking them (cold water wash when hot, or brewing coffee in when cold), or cleaning carelessly. NOT TRUE. Our very carefully treated glass lined one imploded this morning for NO reason whatsoever.
There are fonud models. 1800 All glass, 1800TS (stainless ext with glass vacuum), 1800SS (this one which is stainless with stainless double wall vacuum) and the 1900SS which is a no glass just stainless vacuum. If you look at the reviews of the 1800TS which have been updated, you see users who were originally incredulous at others seeing breakage, now seeing breakage themselves.
Do not assume the breakage on the 1800TS is from misuse see less

* Designed and engineered in Germany; made in China
* Material: stainless-steel, glass, plastic
* Model: BV 1800TH
* Watts: 1,400
* Capacity: 40 oz.
* Overall Size: 10 1/2"W x 6 3/4"D x 11 3/4"H
* Carafe: 6 1/4" Dia. (7 3/4"L with handle) x 7 1/2"H (with lid)
* Weight: 6 lb.
* Cord: 38 1/2"L
Use and Care* Before first use, clean the Bonavita coffee maker by filling the water tank with clear cold water to the maximum level mark and turn the machine on to allow the water to run through (without coffee). Leave the thermal carafe coffee maker to cool down for 5 minutes before repeating the process. Brew hot water through the coffee maker at least two times before brewing with coffee.
* Do not clean the thermal carafe in a dishwasher or immerse it completely in water. Use a soft damp cloth and mild dish cleaning liquid for cleaning the housing and the carafe. The filter basket is dishwasher-safe.
* Do not use wire-brushes or bottle-brushes or cleansers, steel wool pads or other abrasive material on 8-cup coffee maker. In case of tenacious residues (lime, coffee buildup), clean the carafe with weakened vinegar or lemon.
* Never place the thermal carafe on a hotplate or use in microwave oven. see less

Not a simple question because it depends on your grinder. I have a Capresso 560 variable grinder and I like medium grind. If I get whole beans ground at the market or specialty store, I use their "regular grind". It's a matter of taste and in some cases patience. Medium seems to give solid flavor and I can make a full 8 x 5 ounce cup pot in about 6 minutes. Finer grinds take a little longer to brew. Every grinder brand is going to be a bit different - experiment a bit and see what you like. see less
