Actually Le Creusets are stamped with the volume, on the bottom. Except it is in liters, so you will need to convert to quarts, add 5% to liter volume to get quart volume.

Check out any book specializing in Dutch oven cooking. Read up on how to cook with Le Creuset cookware, you can start with high heat - you need to heat up slowly. But you can cook anything in it like soups, sauces, roast a chicken or cook preserves.

For the 4 1/2 qt size, the overall height to top of knob is 6 5/8 inches, and from the outside of the handles is 12 7/8. I am measuring UP to the nearest 1/8 inch.
