Hi, I thought the screen was large enough for me and not too clunky to be portable. I field tested it and it worked perfectly in Germany, Belgium and Holland, so imagine it would work in France as well. The unit comes with a car charger but NOT a wall charger. Might want to get one of those. I kept it in a side pocket of my backpack and it was fine but you can always get a travel like pouch for added protection. You do have to tell the unit in which country you are in-it does not adjust automatically. It has a side port for an sd memory card and while it is a little tricky to spot it is there and I slipped inside an additional card in case I want to add any extras in the future. The 1505M only comes with a car plug-in adapter, but you could also plug it in to a USB power adapter of the type you use for a cellphone, or plug it into a USB port on your desktop, laptop or a USB hub. Coming back to Germany i realized some major roads where outdated, it was as easy as hooking up the tomtom to my mac, create a username on the lifetime update for my unit and there, updated maps for free!!! Not that I'm aware of. It runs off of GPS. I would suggest calling TomTom customer service for technical info. They are very helpful

In the one I purchased the maps for Europe are pre-loaded. Once you connect the unit to a computer they, along with the US maps are continuosly updated. Great unit.
