While N stand for Narrow and M stands for Medium it should say W for women and M for men. Birkenstock is a unisex shoe and the N was created to allow for a better fit for women. Yes Authentic birks have two unique traits to look for. The footbed will state that they are birkenstocks and made in Germany. Additionally on the bottom of the sole the words “Birk” will be all over the bottom engrained in the soling design. Over the last 3 years Birkenstock stopped shipping their original footbe… see more Yes Authentic birks have two unique traits to look for. Over the last 3 years Birkenstock stopped shipping their original footbed and soling materials to repair shops to stop counterfeits from being made with their original parts. We are one of 18 accounts nationwide who r authorized by Birkenstock USA to sell Birkenstock on amazon.com. Birkenstock company says Amazon has no rights to their product and has been trying to stop them from selling because the company is not stocking them to Amazon. They claim they are fakes.

I'm very happy with my first pair of Birkenstock that's not leather upper.

BTW, I like my Eva plastic Birkenstock very much also. They can get wet, provide nearly as much support for my arches. I highly recommend them also.

I wear an 8 1/2 and I always buy a 38. I don't like them to feel loose. The U.S. shoe sizes are right beside the European sizes in parentheses. The moral of this story is if they don't fit, you can exchange them. Good luck! I've worn Birks for 30 years.
