My water bottle that fits is one you buy that would be a plastic throwaway- a 16.9 oz. (500 ml). There is still plenty of room inside the bag, and I like the mesh on the outside, so, if it is a hot day, your bottle sweats some, it doesn't matter.
Yes, I bought this bag because you can wear it crossbody, as I am traveling to Rome, and want to make it very hard for those pickpockets to get my bag. I am 5"4" and have ample strap room with plenty to spare to wear cross-body.

It's not very water resistant. I got caught in a rainstorm and water leaked into the bag through the zippers - the lining and the edges of a map book I had in the purse were wet.
We were able to fit an iPad air in it, with a water bottle in the pocket. It is a tight fit, when you have other things in the bag. But it will zip. We usually left our iPad in the hotel safe while we were sightseeing.
I just put an 8 1/2 x 10" spiral notebook in and it fit and could zip the purse. 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 " pocket folder did not fit. Length of zipper from end to end is about 10.5" but it is slightly curved. Inside the purse it is longer, more like 12.5 - 13".
