No I do not twist a small filter and then I put 2 scoops and the run water for 1 cup as I get ready up 2 3 cups @ 12-13 OZS per trip...

There is one that keeps the coffee hot on the 12 cup side, with an automatic shut off after two hours. There is none
on the one to one and a half cup side. I have had this item since Feb 2013, use it every day, and sometimes twice a day,
and so far have not had any problems with it. I hope this helps you.

Yes you can use paper filters. I use Melitta #1 sized and they work fine but are perfect fit if you fold along the side and bottom crimped edges of the filter. Hard to find in grocery stores since the K-cup craze, but I get mine from Amazon.

The single serve side sits on a removable base. With the base in you can go up to 7 inches. With the base removed it can be up to 9 inches.
With the base in I use a 16 oz coffee mug and it work just fine with a scoop of coffee in the filter basket. It works great.

Yes almost any mug or cup will fit. It comes with a base that flips over to make the cup stand closer to the coffee maker so it doesn't make a mess
