Answer:
I use this with a 3.5 hard drive as an external drive. Works beautifully and I put my work on it - then transfer to my laptop using the USB connection. Never have to unplug the drive, just use the USB to move the hard drive around. :)

There are lots of things that mess with data. Some mechanical, some digital. You should be able to plug your drive into your computer with this. If the drive can work mechanically, then you should be able to copy data from it to another drive in your computer. If it is a digital glitch maybe not so much. If it does work mechanically and sort of reads data Google a program Recuva-File Recovery. I think it is free. Run it in the long mode it worked great for me and recovered files from a disc that appeared to have nothing on it! I just had a laptop drive start crapping out .. message from OS that it needed to be changed/fixed etc. Not wanting to restore OS and EVERYTHING else I found a pretty inexpensive drive cloner on Amazon hard drive cloner http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=hard+drive+clone&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ahard+drive+clone&ajr=2 - Knowing the disc was going I didn't want to run it any more than needed. So I copied it to a little larger drive.. put it back in the laptop and it booted right up and you would never know there was a problem. Way wort the $50 bucks for the clone box which also works as an outboard drive bay when not doing the cloning thing. Hope some of this help. Good luck. In Peace.. Answer:
I'm not sure why it's cheaper, but I do know that Sabrent products are top notch. My guess is that StarTech is gouging since the got the "Amazon's Choice" award for no good reason.
