I wear a size 7 and I think the 5.5-8.5 is too small for me so I would definitely recommend that you get the larger size.

They don't seem tight to me. I find them very comfortable. There is a non-slip edge so they don't need a lot of elastic. The heel edge does seem to push up a bit to create a cushion between my heel and the back of my slip-on Skechers.
