Cornhole Culture & Popularity

Since its creation, cornhole has become a popular tradition for entertainment due to a variety of factors. The game can be played anywhere as cornhole boards can be placed on just about any flat surface. With lightweight bags and varying board sizes, cornhole is a game for players of all ages and abilities. Transportation and storage is easy and simple. Most boards have foldable legs that allow the set to take up less space while not in use.

Cornhole is most popular at tailgating parties. For sports fans everywhere, the pre-game tailgate is nearly as important as the actual sporting event. It is common for cornhole boards and bags to have your team’s logo and colors displayed to show off your team pride. But tailgates aren’t the only home for cornhole. Cornhole can be played at barbeques, family reunions, or just about any other outdoor activity. The game is designed for fun and for bringing people together. Cornhole is truly a game for everyone.

Cornhole ACA regulation size and tailgate sizes.

Board Size and Shape

Boards come in all shapes and sizes to provide a variety of playing surfaces.

Size

ACA regulation size is 24” x 48” and offers the largest target area. Some games come in a Tailgate size of 24” x 36” to offer a smaller more transportable game. There is also a Table Top size of 11” x 7” games to play on a desk or table and is perfect indoors and in college dorms.

Material

Solid wood is the most common type of material to use for your cornhole board. Solid wood offers the most stability and durability. A board made with MDF will be lighter for transportation. A plastic board will be the most weather resistant of all the board types.

Hole Size

The size of the target hole varies from board to board; however, ACA regulation size sets the hole at six inches in diameter. According to ACA regulations, the target hole should be 9 inches from the top of the board. Less experienced players can use a larger hole to provide a better playing experience.

Regulation Cornhole boards and bags.

Cornhole Bags and Boards

Cornhole game sets consist of two pieces of equipment: the cornhole boards and bags. To play, participants will need two cornhole boards and four cornhole bags per player. In order to easily distinguish points earned, each player should have a different colored set of bags. Four players are needed to create two teams, with one member of each team standing by each target board.

Regulation Cornhole Board Requirements

Regulation target boards must be made of solid wood and have the following dimensions:

  • The target board will measure 48 inches by 24 inches.
  • The target hole will be six inches in diameter.
  • From top to bottom, the front edge of the cornhole board will measure 2.5 – 4 inches.
  • The surface of the cornhole board must be free of blemishes that could possibly impede play. The smoother the surface, the better.

Regulation Cornhole Bag Requirements

  • Official cornhole bags will measure 6” by 6”
  • The final weight of the cornhole bags will be approximately 15 ounces.
  • Duckcloth fabric should be sewn together with a ¼” double seam.

Court Set-Up.

Court Set-Up

Just like any other sport, cornhole is played in a defined playing area and often is called the playing court. While this court can be set up just about anywhere, there are certain rules that apply to its overall design.

  • A large, rectangular area is needed–at least 45 feet long by 10 feet wide.
  • The cornhole court must be level. If the court is not level the bags may slide to one side of the board upon landing.
  • A pitcher’s box can be found parallel to each cornhole board. It extends three feet from either side of the board. All pitches must be made from this area. If a player tosses the bean bag from outside the pitchers box the toss will not count.

Playing by Cornhole Rules.

Cornhole Rules and Gameplay

Before play begins, players must agree on either a singles or doubles match. In a singles match, one competitor competes against each other. Both competitors toss from the same board. After each inning, the players switch boards and aim at the other target. In double play, there are two teams with two players on each team. One member from each team will stand next to different boards on the same side.

A Cornhole Game is Divided Into Innings

  • In singles play, both competitors pitch four bags each from the same board, alternating between players. The inning is complete when all eight bags have been tossed.
  • In doubles play, two opponents pitch four bags each from the same board, alternating between players. When two competitors have finished, the other two players toss their bags in the same manner from the other board. The inning is complete when all four participants have tossed.
  • A player has 20 seconds to toss the bag once they step into the batter's box

Tossing Order

  • The player who scored the most points in the previous inning will toss first.
  • If no points are scored in the previous inning, the player that tossed second will toss first in the new inning.
