Trade-in and sustainability

Amazon Trade-in is part of Amazon's commitment to building a sustainable business for our customers and the planet. Traded-in Amazon devices are restored and re-sold to new owners wherever possible, and any Amazon devices not qualified for resale are recycled through an Amazon-approved recycler.

If your device is not eligible for the Amazon Trade-in program, the Amazon Recycling Program will provide you with a shipping label for you to ship your device to be recycled and safety disposed of at a licensed recycling facility at no cost.

Creating a Trade-in

How do I submit devices for Trade-In?

On the Trade-In landing page, select the category of the device you want to trade-in to get started. You can also start a trade-in from an eligible product detail page. Next, select the devices(s) you’re trading in. Trade-in devices must match the product description or specifications provided during the trade-in process. Next, answer a few questions about the condition of your device(s).

Once you create your order you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to send Amazon your trade-in device. For step-by-step directions see the Create a Trade-In help page.

Where do I see my Trade-in discount or Amazon limited-time rebate?

Some trade-in's may be eligible to earn a limited-time instant discount or Amazon limited-time rebate toward the purchase of a new qualifying device. When you go through the process of creating a trade-in order, your limited-time instant discount or Amazon limited-time rebate is displayed at the Trade-in review step. Customers may redeem the instant discount or see their trade-in Amazon limited-time rebate amount during checkout when they purchase a qualifying device.

You can keep track of your trade-in order status and discount details on the Your Trade-in Account page.

How do I prepare my device for Trade-In & remove my personal data?

After creating your trade-in order, please unlock and deregister your device from cloud services (if applicable) before sending it in. This step is required for all iOS, Android, Windows and Nintendo device trade-ins. You can find instructions by visiting Unlock or Deregister Your Device for Trade-In. Please note that deregistering your device will only remove the device from your account, however, your personal data will not be removed. Before shipping, you are required to perform a factory reset to ensure all your data is removed from the device.

What will you do with any data left on the device that I trade in?

You are solely responsible for removing all data, including confidential and personal data, from your device prior to shipping or dropping it off. Amazon does not accept any responsibility or liability for any lost files or data. If a SIM card or similar data storage is discovered in a device, it is destroyed upon acceptance of the device.

What condition do my devices need to be in?

We currently accept a range of conditions depending on the device you are trading-in. Irrespective of the condition of the device, you may still be eligible for a limited-time promotional discount or Amazon limited-time rebate towards the purchase of a new qualifying device.

What if my device doesn’t qualify for Trade-in?

You can recycle Amazon Devices and accessories through our Amazon-approved recycler at no cost to you and with free shipping.

We only accept devices that are owned outright. If we receive a device that is still under a financing contract or with outstanding balance, it will be returned to you. Return shipping charges may apply.

Trade-in benefits

What is Instant Payment?

Depending on the estimated value of your trade-in device(s), you may be eligible for Instant Payment. Instant Payment customers will receive their trade-in benefits (which may include an Amazon.com Gift Card and/or limited-time promotional discount) immediately upon creation of your trade-in order.

Eligibility for Instant Payment may vary from one trade-in order to another. In order to qualify for Instant Payment, you must reside in the United States and have a valid payment instrument with sufficient credit limit associated with your Amazon account (among other requirements). See the Instant Payment section of the Amazon Trade-In Program Terms & Conditions page for more details.

What is the Amazon limited-time rebate?

With the Amazon limited-time rebate, you will pay the current price for your new eligible device, and we’ll verify the condition of your trade-in within 10 business days after we receive your device. Once verified, you’ll receive your Amazon limited-time rebate to your original payment method.

How is gift card value determined?

Your final Amazon.com gift card value depends on the model, generation and condition of your device. To qualify for the highest value, your device must be in good condition with all features operational. It cannot have any breaks, dents, cracks, missing buttons, or other defects beyond normal wear and tear. Learn more by reading our Electronics Eligibility Criteria. If condition criteria are not met, you have the choice when creating your trade-in order to have your trade-in device returned to you or receive a lower value than the original estimate.

How do I use my benefits towards my next device purchase?

Before you can use your benefits, you must first create a trade-in order. Some trade-in offers may include a limited time promotional discount or an Amazon limited-time rebate towards a new qualifying device (not available for video game trade-ins).

If you receive Instant Payment, you will instantly receive your (i) Amazon.com Gift Card, and, if applicable, your (ii) limited-time promotional discount towards the purchase of an eligible device, which will be displayed during checkout.

If you did not receive Instant Payment, your Amazon.com Gift Card will be issued to your Amazon account after we receive and verify the condition of your trade-in device(s). If eligible, you’ll also receive your Amazon limited-time rebate to your original payment method after your trade-in device is received and verified.

See Amazon Trade-In Program Terms & Conditions page for more details.

What are the limits on how many promotional discounts can I get?

For Amazon Devices (Kindle, Tablet, Fire TV, Echo, Home Security Devices, and eero), your trade-in limited-time promotional discount is limited to 1 per customer account, per device category, per calendar quarter (beginning January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1). See Bonus Offer Terms for a complete list of eligible device categories.

Only one promotional benefit (if applicable) may be issued per trade-in order, regardless of the number of devices included in that order. Once an order has been created, the promotional discount (if applicable) will be tied to that order and cannot be changed, unless that order is cancelled. Pending orders may be cancelled in your Trade-in Account Page.

What are the limits on how many devices I can trade in per order?

For most devices, you may include up to five devices with a maximum total value of $1,800 per standalone trade-in order, with a limit of two trade-Ins total for the exact device (make, model and specifications) per calendar quarter (Q1 = Jan-Mar, Q2 = Apr-Jun, Q3 = July-Sept, Q4 = Oct-Dec). When purchasing a new phone with a trade-in, you can trade in one phone and purchase one new phone per order.

How long will it take to receive payment once I trade in my device?

If you ship your trade-in, we’ll verify it within 10 business days after we receive your trade-in device. Once verified, you’ll receive your Amazon limited-time rebate to your original payment method and your trade- in value as an Amazon.com Gift Card to your Amazon account.

Amazon Devices (Kindle, Tablet, Fire TV, Echo, Home Security Devices, and eero) Trade-In orders that are dropped off at participating locations may be verified in the same day. You should receive an email as soon as your benefits are applied.

Track your Trade-in status in Your Trade-In Account page.

What happens to my Trade-in benefits if my device is returned or rejected?

If your trade-in device is rejected and/or returned, your order will be cancelled and you will no longer be eligible to receive your benefits. Your device will be sent back to the return address you specified when you created your Trade-In order.

If you received Instant Payment, the value of the Gift Card will be rescinded. Charges will first attempt to be deducted from the Amazon.com Gift Card issued for the trade-in device(s). If the gift card is empty, or has an insufficient balance, then the full amount owed back will be charged to your credit card on file instead (even if there are other gift cards with value on your account).

How can I prevent my trade-in device from being rejected and/or returned?

To prevent your trade-in from being rejected and/or returned, ensure the following criteria is met before sending us your device: Excluding color, the device you send matches the exact make, model and specifications of the device selected during trade-in order creation. If it doesn’t match, your device might be downgraded or returned. You can avoid having your device returned to you if you select “Accept the adjusted value” during your trade-in order creation.

Your device is owned outright by you, and is not under any payment contract with a third party / carrier. Your device is unlocked from cloud/carrier services and all personal accounts are removed, and/or the device has been factory reset. See Prepare Your Device for Trade-In for more information on how to prepare your device.

The device is constructed of original parts, and has not been customized in any way, internally or externally. The device does not have any internal components exposed, such as an expanded battery or loose wiring.

Learn more by reading our Electronics Eligibility Criteria. If your device does not meet these criteria, consider recycling it instead.

Your device may be downgraded (but still accepted) if the device's condition does not match what was specified during order creation. During Trade-in order creation, you may elect to have your device returned to you in the event of a downgrade instead of accepting a reduced value. Return fees may apply.

After I complete my trade-in, how do I find out if I received my trade-in gift card and Amazon limited-time rebate (if applicable)?

You can find information about the status of your trade-in order and benefits in your Trade-in Account Page. You will also be notified via email of any changes in your trade-in status.

What happens to my instant payment if my trade-in device is retuned or rejected?

If you received Instant Payment, Amazon will charge back the value of the gift card. Any charges will first be deducted from the Amazon.com gift card issued for the trade-in device, with any remaining balance charged to your credit card on file (even if there are other gift cards with value on your account).

What happens to my Trade-In benefits if I don't send in my trade-in device?

In order to keep your benefits, you must send in or drop off your device within 45 days. When purchasing a new phone with a trade-in, you must ship your old phone within 30 days of receiving your new phone. The trade-in deadline is provided in your Trade-in order confirmation email and can also be found in your Trade-In Account page. If you do not complete your trade-in in time, your order will expire, and you will no longer be eligible to receive your benefits. Your pending trade-in order will still count against the promotional limits and device limits described above, unless it is cancelled.

If you received Instant Payment, the value of the gift card will be rescinded. Charges will first attempt to be deducted from the Amazon.com Gift Card issued for the Trade-in device(s). If the gift card has an insufficient balance, then the full amount owed back will be charged to your credit card on file instead (even if there are other gift cards with value on your account).
