First heard this on a college radio station and thought it was a new re-mix club/dub mix that was the bomb. Scored it on Amazon only to find out it was the Original. Some cuts I think are great but the overall style is too repetitive with the bongo solos for all the songs. I think the purchase was worth it for Apache alone but many won't like the stylings of 70's funk with the Mancini like strings and the bongo flavorings. For collectors mostly.

I bought Bongo Rock with the expectation of hearing an instrumental album, instead of listening to an hour of breakbeats. That said, there's a reason many seek the latter, and it's mostly due to the percussive chemistry shared between Jim Gordon and King Errisson, driving everything else, like a 70's funky showdown version of Rich vs. Roach. The grooves they create more or less settle you in as to what to expect for the duration of the disc, with less variation but also less repetition than you might expect. I would fit it in listening sessions as a starter to greater funk instrumentals, such as "Absolutely The Best Of Dennis Coffey", or alternatively with other great cover bands like The Ventures.

Highlights for me were actually towards the end of the disc:
"Okey Dokey" reminds me a bit of Goblin's "Snip Snap" until the orchestra cues launch it into ultra exploitation soundtrack land, and it then settles back into deep percussion.
"Pipeline" is surprisingly transformed into a soulful slow jam; very inspired cover approach!
"Sharp Nine" seems to have the tightest groove and the players are all on top of their game here.
The two remixes are ok, but are not much of a dj or remixer showcase.

Sound quality of the CD is mediocre, like a decent mp3. Not really good for a high end system. Can't help thinking the now very expensive original LP probably blows it away in terms of clarity and character.

Ah the glory days of instrumental rock hits. If you liked the original Preston Epps hit, you'll like the Incredible Bongo Band's version. A couple of cuts sound dated, but most have a retro-rock vibe that holds up today. Great album for a road trip.

Fantastic album that you can't help but to play loud and smile often. Early 70's fidelity and production techniques that only add to the whole effect. It's cheesy and groundbreaking all at the same time!

If you are a fan of hip hop from the 80s then this album is the Portland cement for your concrete mix. A"project" by Michael Vines to supplement B-Movies is an instant break beats classic
