By the early thirteenth century, European Jewish life was firmly rooted in the directives and doctrines of the Babylonian Talmud. In 1236, however, an apostate named Nicholas Donin appeared at the court of Pope Gregory IX, claiming that the Talmud was harmful and thus intolerable in a Christian society. Pope Gregory sent Donin off throughout Europe in 1239 with a message to secular authorities and leading clergy: Donin's allegations were to be carefully investigated, and - if substantiated - the Talmud was to be destroyed. Only one European ruler acted on the papal injunction, the pious King Louis IX of France, who convened a trial of the Talmud in Paris. This unprecedented event is richly reflected in a variety of sources, both Christian and Jewish, here brought together in English translation for the first time.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The so-called Trial of the Talmud that took place in Paris in 1240 has been the subject of a number of trenchant studies over the years. The present volume, with its felicitous, annotated translations of the Hebrew protocol along with a series of crucial papal letters and other church documents, places before an English-language readership for the first time a corpus of the essential primary texts that have framed the earlier scholarly discussions and analyses. The masterful overview by Robert Chazan effectively locates this disputation in its historical and literary contexts through a deft, critical synthesis of the previous studies; it also offers new insights which will undoubtedly serve to shape further discussion of this episode. This volume should be of great interest to scholars and students of medieval Jewish history and thought, Jewish-Christian relations, and polemical literature in medieval Europe. - Ephraim Kanarfogel, Yeshiva University

The introduction gives a fair account of both sides, but the analysis of the actual case entirely sides with the defense (i.e. the Rabbis) because they only list the 35 accusations but they go into considerable detail to elucidate the defense's response to each without also putting in the prosecutions rebuttals.

It was defended by Jewish authors whose point of view, using their Talmud as evidence, makes the trial put on by the Christian side look to be in complete error. The missing facts not given by the authors should have included the Ashkenazi infiltration along with the money lending which was completely against any Christian principles and is the present day enslavement of humanity under their banking system, (the Rothschilds and their affiliate bankers) which allows for "private banking" to loan a country money charging usury. Since the infrastructure of any country (roads, schools, hospitals etc) does not make a profit it is impossible to have any loans made to a country to ever be repaid by our children's, children's, children. They also have members of high level decision making in the IMF and other areas of finance like the Wall Street gangsters (Goldman Sachs to the Rocher Fellows) who have literally destroyed the finance of many countries from Argentina to Africa and have blood on their hands. Check out a condensed version of their history and evil origins on 'iamthewitness.com' and you'll learn the truth about what is really going on with our planet. If we had governments with any balls instead of a group of graft takers, the banking system would be dismantled by a peaceful military act and the money returned to the people of each country where it is supposed to be. There is something definitely wrong when one family, the Rothschilds, can own over 500 trillion in cash which is half of the world's wealth, over 50% of the land and the same amount in natural resources, ie.,precious metals (gold in particular, an old Anunnaki favorite) and have no law in place to prevent this travesty from continuing. Yet they're always crying that they are the ones being persecuted when quite the opposite is in fact the truth, just ask the Palestinians. Time to change the game and give the people back their STOLEN wealth, Steve V..
