Non of the buttons are working on my t2i. Shutter is half pressed and when camera is turned on it tries to focus.

First, if you half-press the shutter release when the camera is on, it is supposed to focus, so that part is working correctly.

Note that when you have the camera in Automatic mode (the "green rectangle" is selected on the Mode dial on top of the camera), you are telling the camera to make a lot of decisions *FOR* you. Therefore, in that mode, the functions of some buttons are disabled. You need to move into Program (P), if not Av, Tv, or M mode to take advantage of all the features and controls.
