From the Manufacturer
Piper is the first all-in-one home security and home automation device. It combines an HD camera, panoramic video, Z-Wave home automation and environmental sensors into a single, elegant product that you interact with on your Android/iOS device. Piper transcends traditional security with no monthly contracts or fees, and there is no installation required; it is ready out of the box. One of Piper's main features includes fully customizable security through its wide-angle camera that lets you watch over what matters most. Set up rules for what Piper does when you're at home, away or on vacation -- "If motion is detected while I'm on vacation, sound the siren, record a video, and send me a text message."-- and know immediately what's going on. Piper also features alerts so you can get notified when things happen at home with a phone call, text message, or email and watch a video of what got Piper's attention. Within the camera view, watch live video and talk directly to occupants in the room. Piper is ideal for communicating with kids after school, pets while at work, house sitters while away and for checking in on elderly parents or grandparents. Lastly, Piper features smart hardware and comes equipped with a motion detector, microphone, piercing siren, and battery backup for constant protection. Its built-in Z-Wave controller enables you to control, automate and schedule lights and small appliances, so your home can manage itself.

My system configuration has successfully paired these devices
Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Water Sensor
Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Door/Window Sensor
Aeon Labs DSC24-ZWUS Smart Switch Z-Wave Appliance Module
Ecolink Z-Wave PIR Motion Detector, Pet Immune
So the piper monitors the back room by the rear door and sees up the kitchen, from the other side of the house we have the motion detector. Both front and rear doors are armed with the Door sensor. I have an outlet on a schedule that is also programmed to turn on in case of an alarm via the appliance module. Lastly, I just installed the water sensor in the basement where I have had water heater leaks, leaks of water through the foundation and hopefully NO more sewer backups.
In pairing the motion sensor seemed perplexing because of the long lag time before it resets. Why does it still stay closed dammit! I triggers and remains "closed" for 5 minutes, so you have to wait. One thing I have not tried if I arm the Piper before I leave and the motion detector is still on, will it trigger?? Hope not.
All the sensors detect pretty quickly. The water sensor just needs only a tiny coating of water between the contacts before it goes off. I have had no false alarms.
The outlet control is good for having lights periodically turn on and off. The light also turns on when the sensors trip to further confuse any burglars and shed light on the situation.
The home monitoring function for temperature is an important element in the system. I can get alerts when the temperature is out of range, low or high. I have a furnace with a pilot and had the pilot go out while I was on a winter vacation. This could lead to broken pipes and a swimming pool in my basement. High temp would detect fire but I would like to hook up the First Alert Zwave smoke detector which people say pairs but is probably not supported directly by piper. Perhaps it sees it as OPEN, Closed and will trigger alerts like a door sensor. I have not heard of success. This is a item they should be working on if they intend Piper to be a success.
There are 4 modes and you can set the triggering based on each sensor in each mode. So in STAY mode, when you are home you can have the door sensors on but not everything else. If you have a room that you are not likely to walk into while home/asleep but could be broken into a motion sensor could be triggered. Each device trip can be controlled in each mode. In each mode, Stay, away, vacation you can have different actions that you can set. So my away mode does not trigger the alarm, only email, text messages, since I am likely to forget and not want to trigger the alarm. I use the vacation as my super away mode where the alarm goes off etc.
The biggest pain is the fact you need the phone and internet connectivity to control the system. So if I return and my phone connects to CableWiFi from nearby, I often am not really connected to the internet, it looks that way and it looks like the piper is not responding. Turning off wifi and using the celluar network gets around this, or opening up the settings and selecting my router. Of course if my wireless router goes down and needs a reboot this is also problem. For when I am away I plan on using my old Samsung S3 cell phone as a piper controller that I can give my sister if she needs to get in. I just have to set it for airplane mode and just use wifi.
So overall I like this system so far. I have monitored it on vacation. I was able to see that the house was still there, no water in the basement, heat is OK, doors closed and also get a sense of the state of the living room where most electronics can be found. Video quality is pretty good, certainly not super high quality. When recorded it goes to the cloud and you can replay the previous times it triggered.
I would like them to integrate
Fire/Carbon monoxide detection
TV control would be a nice way to make it seem someone is there.
Also it would be nice to access through a PC on a secure connection. At work this would be much easier to do. I can receive email alerts.
All in all I have to say I feel better when I am away from home and I have not signed up for any monthly payment to a monitoring service. Much better than having nothing.
The designer and company should be embarrassed by this lack of attention to designing a better installation experience.... during this day and age.
Unfortunately I do not recommend this product as a result of it's nightmare Installation experience.
It's been three days and i have not been able to install it... actually add it to my current Piper's.
It is apparent the installation procedures was an afterthought.
