Okay, so I had found this game a while ago and I immediately wanted. However, I didn't want to pay for it right then and there, so I added it to my saved for later list.

Lo and behold, I am glad that I waited! I love the FAOTD part of the app store.

Though, now that I've played this game for a bit, I would have gladly paid full price for it. The first thing I noticed when I started playing was the awesome music this game has. For a Kindle game, I was not expecting that. I think that made the experience of playing all the more enjoyable, as the music seemed to very well match the scenery and the gameplay. I actually found the dungeon to be creepy while I was going through the levels thanks to the eerie sounds.

Secondly, this is a great styled RPG. It kinda reminded me of Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy XII with lesser graphics (though still really good for a Kindle game) and first-person shooter style battling/interaction. I like the fact that the battles are real-time rather than turn-based, because it just makes it more realistic (even if there are no motions involved. The map is also very useful; it shows you where doorways to new areas or previously explored areas are, it shows you friendly characters, and it shows you enemies that are approaching. Most useful - the map shows you which direction you are facing, so you're not guessing.

List of complaints:

- Because the battles are in realtime, accessing the inventory during a fight does not prevent the monster from attacking you.

- No tutorial, which means you have to figure everything out by yourself (which isn't too hard, but a tutorial would make it even easier). (Resolved, see second edit)

- Lacks a clean exit, though that might be because I haven't found a save spot (if there is one). So, instead of just hitting the back button, I have to hit the home button. I assume by what the main menu options are that we are supposed to be able to get back to the main menu at some point. If someone could let me know about that one, that'd be great. (Resolved, see first edit)

In short, this is a really fun game, and despite the issues I highly recommend it. Especially today, when the only thing you pay is time for download and install. But even so, the full price is still worth it, in my opinion.

- Sam

Edit: Clean exit and save function found, thank you Zuma! Still 4/5 due to lack of tutorial, but at least now I can exit cleanly.

- Sam

Edit: Okay, so after playing this game to a week and seeing everything it has to offer, I'm upgrading my rating to 5 stars. Also, thanks to the developer for telling me about the website! There is a lot of helpful information on there (and how I wish I would have read the part about the hot pink potion before taking it...), definitely an adequate tutorial. And, let's face it, Zebo's kinda grown on me.

this game is broaken. you die constantly and there is no chance to get through it using what the store gives you. your skills and spells are under powered for the monsters you go up against. I thought it would be a fun throw back to some of the first pc games of this kind. but no, totally a dud don't buy this game it isn't worth the 99 cents to get it.

this is a fun game. I enjoyed the old school game play. A few things could make it better. for instance, a quick button to switch between melee and ranged weapons would be nice. for instance, using a bow from a distance, as the monsters advance, they are too close so want to move to sword/axe which is more damage. a quick (bow to sword/axe) button would fix that. The other idea is that when you pause is to let you re-arm with different weapons. currently when you pause, you can take no actions on your character. Also, the level up is good, but for such a short game initially, you barely get to try any new powers. It would be nice to be able to try more options out. You can play a new game with your character with all his/her weapons, etc. Anyway, not bad for a app. I am playing more to try new powers, but the level up is slow after you have played the game thru all the way the first time.

Edit...9/27/2012 There have been several updates to this game since my original review, all for the better. This is game is definitely one of the best games out there, android or apple, and keeps getting better. And what other game does the developer (see comments) answer/address your concerns directly?

Following is the original review with updates at the end:

This is a good game but as of now it has some minor flaws on a Kindle Fire. First you cannot use earphones because this game makes you play it in portrait mode and the earphone jack is at the bottom of the Kindle and you have to hold up the Kindle or it will keep hitting and rubbing the plug on the earphones. Yep, it plays in portrait mode. Once you start playing it is apparent to me this game would be much better in landscape mode. Another problem is that you cannot rotate the Kindle in any other position so now you also will have it turning itself off sometimes because the on/off button it at the bottom of the Kindle and as you set the Kindle down, it will hit the button and automatically turn itself off.

This game is a dungeon crawler that uses the one step position method. You hit a button and you move one step forward, backward, to the right or to the left. To keep moving forward you have to hit the button again. Also you can only face in four positions, north, south, west or east (although you can use your finger on the screen and look around). But with the map, you actually can move around pretty fast by just hitting the direction you want to go several times, that helps a lot. Game is a RPG with typical setup of crawling around the dungeon gaining experience and getting better weapons and armor. There is also the ability to buy and sell goods. But it has VERY old school graphics and movement. I read a review comparing this to the original Doom but I do not think that is correct. Doom has much more advanced graphics and movement. The characters (monsters) in this game are like photo cutouts that just do minor movements and then relocate on a different square (game plays like you are on a grid system, or giant chess board (as explained above)). (Edit...characters move much more now, must have been a game update).

Another problem is the game locks up a lot and will freeze your Kindle and you have to do a shutdown to get it working again. (Edit...this does not seem to happen anymore, must have been fixed in an update).

But there is one larger problem, the game will let you save once you have DIED and there is NO way to load an older save. This happened while being attacked and I went through a door. You have just lost everything and will have to start over from the very beginning. This would be big improvement to fix this problem. (Edit...after playing for a while, this became much less of a problem, I learned just not to go through door while fighting on certain levels).

But after saying all the negatives, it is a very entertaining game. The developer did a nice job with game experience, tons of loot, a buy and sell system, nice leveling up, many levels etc.

Edit...6/12/2012 I changed my original rating from 3 stars to 5. I realized that I was being hypercritical especially seeing how much time I still play this game and its initial cost. I have actually spent too much time playing this so it tells me I enjoyed it much more than my original ratings/review said. Highly recommend.

Edit...7/10/2012 I should mention that unlike many games today, this game does NOT ask for more money once you have purchased the game and start playing. This is a rare but nice treat in that many of today's games that keep trying to get more money out of you after purchase. Some games you cannot even win unless you pay them for certain items.

Edit...8/27/2012 Wish I could figure out how to delete saved games. I know I can keep creating new games, but I have OCD and need to delete the old games first (yea I know, but for me this is IMPORTANT). Tried deleted the game file from my Fire, and then re-installing the game, but it remembered the saved games...BAD! Help

Edit...9/27/2012 Concerning how to delete old games, I took the developers suggestion and just deleted the files via the directory, it is one way to do it (I used the `Quickoffice' program that came with the Kindle to get to the directory, did not use a computer)!

Dommage !

Bought this to play on my kindle fire hd and it's fantastic, I really like the easy setting as you don't die you just get knocked over, so even if your not great at this type of game you can still play and have fun, graphics are good, sound is good, gameplay is flawless, I highly recommend this game.
