Don't buy if you don't want to take care of a good pan

14 month review. When "new" warm pan so you can barely touch, light coat flax oil all over. 500 degree oven, cool slowly. Repeat 6x. Add oil and cook. Wash with hot water and stainless wash cloth. NO SOAP! Heat to warm in oven (complete dry), wipe with flax, 500 degrees. Ready for next meal. Used on the grill, oven, in 10 degree weather.
4 year review. I’ve cooked at least 100-200 times and have stored in my Minnesota unheated garage for the last four years. The pic is of my 4yo pan.

Great Cast Iron at a Very Reasonable Price Point

I bought this, mostly because of the reasonable price point, and positive feedback. I went ahead and seasoned it with pork lard (thin coat, one hour at 400˚F), and had no issues with either sticking, flaking, or even smoking. I'm no culinary expert, but I am capable. I was able to sear a couple of steaks and the results were restaurant quality. In my humble opinion. Online videos are widely available to hone your expertise. I'm very pleased with the skillet. I looked at other cast iron offerings at local grocers and retail, and they were about double in cost. I can't speak to the heat distribution, but I used a standard gas stovetop and as far as I could tell the surface cooked consistently. And yes, the steak in photo was made the same day that I wrote this review (with the help of a sous vide product).

It's pre-seasoned, so that chore is eliminated, and with the heat resistant removable handle cover that goes right into the oven with the pan, the chances of being burned are reduced to almost nil. The one thing I'd want younger users to understand is that you should never leave a cast iron skillet in water to soak. Remember that this one is "preseasoned" so it's almost like teflon when it comes to "non-stick." properties. If you treat it right, this will last your lifetime, and well beyond, if properly cared for.

Simply cast iron - a good thing

First I have to disclose that I am no expert in cast iron cookware. I bought this after reading up on non-stick materials and deciding that cast iron was a better alternative worth trying. I had seen friends using them with success and they loved them. I researched use and care of cast iron and while they do require a bit more care the material is non-toxic and will last decades. They really are non-stick when used correctly. Just Google how to use and clean a cast iron pan. This one is nice and I like the heat resistant handle cover. The 12 inch size is heavy so you will likely need a pot holder on the loop opposite the handle to pick it up when hot. It comes seasoned and ready to use which is nice. It does not come with a cover so you need to use one you have or purchase one separately. I just use one from another pan when I need to. The only downside to cast iron for some is the weight. They are harder to move around and put away. Don't drop one of these on your foot! You also won't likely be tossing and flipping food with one of these while cooking. Maybe a small one. For that stainless is better but otherwise these hold and distribute heat well and are very affordable. You won't have to replace it in a couple years because the non-stick is peeling off.

I have used this pan a number of times since I got it. My intention for it was to use while camping, but have not been camping since it was delivered so I have been using it in the house. I have had cast iron pans in the past and have not taken care of them properly and eventually decided to get rid of them for something easier. Now that my kids are older and life has seemed to slow down a little bit, it doesn't seem that hard/time consuming to take care of the pan properly -I hope that I continue to take care of it properly for years to come. I am hoping for crispier hash browns than what I am getting now with my other pans, but have not had a chance to try them yet.

Great from stove to oven

I bought this skillet so that I could go from the stovetop to the oven without transferring food to an oven proof dish. I seasoned it when it first arrived (even though it came pre-seasoned, I read reviews that said it was advisable to do so) and my first dish was a homemade pizza that I'd been dying to try. It came out wonderfully! It slid right out of the pan and was perfectly crunchy. I slid the silicone cover on the handle after removing it from the oven to make it easier to handle (although that did get extremely hot in a very short time and I had to use a pot holder anyway.) My only gripe is that it is quite heavy. With food in it, I have to use 2 hands to move it, so I am unable to hold it with one hand and get the food out with the other. Perhaps I am a weakling, but I'm 48 and workout with weights so I doubt it. Other than that, it's great for what I want it to do and I'm looking forward to many meals with it in the future.

Great skillet for the price. It says that the cast iron is already seasoned, but I highly recommend seasoning it yourself as well. Cleaning is simple with some water and a nylon scrubby. Just make sure you don't let a dirty cast iron pan sit for too long. To avoid any potential problems, and for overall cleaning simplicity, you'll want to clean it, dry it, and re-oil it as soon as possible. Also the silicon handle is great, and makes cooking so much easier. Just make sure you remove the silicon handle from the skillet before you put it into the oven.
