Garlic and cheese so far,very happy and couldn't find till now!!!
I just watched her use it on tv and she uses both ends, depending on what texture she wants. One end gives a texture like minced, the other tiny ribbons.

Maybe 6-8 ounces. However, it rests on the side of a bowl, pot or cutting board when you are using it to grate. Love it because it does no smooch garlic or act more like a juicer on thinks like carrots or onions.

I like it best for zesting citrus, but also used it for garlic & ginger. For large amounts of ginger, I use a food processor, but this is great for small amounts. Don't know about fresh turmeric.
love the microplane...use this mostly for citrus rind, garlic, ginger and nutmeg.

The holes...amount and size. Think box grater. One side has very fine small holes to give you a much finer grate (i.e. for onion, garlic). Another side has a larger hole (i.e. Cheese).
Away. If you run your finger up on top of the grater towards yourself, it's smooth. But if you run your finger on top of the grater down away from you, ouch!...it would grate it. It's very sharp. You can use the back and forth action for some foods like Parmesan cheese, ginger and garlic though. I like that the grated food collected in the channel underneath. It's the best grater I've ever owned. Don't know why I didn't buy it a long time ago. I have a drawer full of graters and none can hold a candle to this one.
