Yes it is. The UWSR and the UWSR+ are programmable; you need a RS232 plug with USB serial connection (not included in the UWSR package). You go to the microchip.homeagain.com URL, go to the bottom of the front page and select the 'software download' option key. You will be directed in the usual way to open, download and save, or run, the software. You can order the RS232 and USB download cable from the homeagain.com website. As it is shipped right now, the UWSR scanners are already programmed with all the currently used microchips out there. However, if you come across a dog, you scan the dog, and the scanner can not read the code, it will still tell you if one is there. You can take the dog to a local Vet and they should be able to read the code with their scanner.

Five Stars

Was easy to administer to my dogs, and the paper work was a breeze.

How will this help me find my dog if he gets lost?

It won't help you find your dog. It will help your dog find you. If you register the chip, if your dog is found and scanned, your information will come up and you would be contacted by the organization that has your dog. You only need to register the chip one time. You don't need to do anything each year. That is basically a donation.

Is there a micro chip out there that I can track my dog using my iPhone?

Microchips do NOT allow you to track animals. There are some tracking collars with gps that can be used with iphones. Check the reviews carefully because some are not so hot http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_6_5?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=tagg+pet+tracker+collar&sprefix=tagg+%2Caps%2C355

Must have dog ID

Easy to give and simple to set up. Love it!

Five Stars

I use this for all of my rescued foster dogs and this arrived quickly and without difficulty.

Perfect for rescue dogs

Occasionally we get rescue dogs and this is awesome to have them chipped before placing them with their new family.

Can you do this your self at home?

If you vaccinate your dogs at home, it is the same process except the chip goes between the shoulder blades of the dog. If you are not comfortable with doing it, have your vet do it. I am a breeder so I am comfortable with the process. Best to you and your dog.

How do i install the address etc on the chip?

go to HomeAgain.com and pay the fee for the microchip then enter the dogs info as well as yours

Are these the 15-digit microchips that are required internationally?

I am sorry we don't deal with international dogs So I can't answer that question for you

Are these able to be used in horses? are they usef sanctioned?

We are a Rescue and usd them for cats and dogs. I would suggest to contact your veterinarian with this question

what gauge needle does this use for injection?

This is a self contained unit. Complete and ready to use. You don't need to buy needles. I don't know needle guage that is included with the syringe but it is attached as a complete unit. I use it on my small miniature donkey foals. They are the size of a medium sized dog. Works fine for them. Hope that helps answer your question.

Hi! Lasting date? Does it work in horses?

There's no set "expected to die by" date. Usually microchips last around 10-15 years but sometimes something goes weird and one will die well before then. It is advisable to have microchips scanned yearly during annual checkups. Most equine vets in my area carry the wands already and check for free. Best to ask yours if they can do that. Yes, these work on horses but will be installed in a different location from cats and dogs. If I remember correctly it gets implanted in the side of their neck instead of the shoulder area. I've used these for various species myself.

I just want to know what is the point of scanning the microchips can you change the information?

The scanner just tells you the number of the microchip. This is useful for people who pick up a lot of stray dogs and don't want to go to the vet to get them scanned. It's also useful for vets offices and animal rescues.

Is the firmware user upgradeable?

Yes it is. The UWSR and the UWSR+ are programmable; you need a RS232 plug with USB serial connection (not included in the UWSR package). Does this work with all pets chip?

As far as I know, yes. We use it at our dog rescue and it works very well, and has been extremely useful in identifying lost dogs and reuniting them with their owners (so long as the owners POC info is updated!!!). As the name implies, it is a Universal chip reader, meaning it will read all the ISO Standard chips in use today; ie., 134.2 kHz, 128 kHz, and 125 kHz chips. Remember to scan the entire animal across the shoulders and down the legs and up the neck as chips will migrate thru the body from where they were inserted over time.
