d.light S10 is a bright and durable replacement for flashlights, battery-powered lanterns, candles, and kerosene lanterns. It is 3 to 5 times brighter than a kerosene lantern, and is built to survive tough conditions, including accidental drops onto hard mud or concrete, rainshowers, and intense heat and dust. d.light S10 provides space lighting for the home, workplace, or while traveling. It also serves as a task light for studying, working or cooking. Its integrated solar panel removes the complication of installation and wires, its 2 brightness settings offer up to 8 hours of bright light, its dual solar and AC charging option allows charging even during rainy or cloudy days, and its multiple-setting handle provides maximum flexibility for any use situation.

Just ordered another S10 from I-Solar and discovered this Amazon product page has been hijacked by a Chinese rip off company. Product is clearly not made by d.light but is a blatant clone falsely claiming to be the original. The design has been changed in several ways but I won't know if they are for the better or worse for weeks or months. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT. The new improved version from d.light is here: d.light LED Solar Rechargeable #S20 Area Lantern. The S20 is a better product from the original manufacturer that is making a difference, not just a buck. Guess what, it's even cheaper (as of Dec 3, 2015).
This new version is different than what was sold previously. The new one is red plastic and MUCH brighter. The 2 brightness levels are clearly different, unlike the prior blue version. Hard to believe it came from the same manufacturer.
It's intended to replace kerosene lamps in the developing world so that's what you should compare it to. Much brighter than a flame, not as bright as an incandescent bulb. But unlike anything we normally use, the power doesn't involve human intervention or control. And the on-going cost is zip.
Highly recommended for power failures and just for living green. I really like the idea of using sun power in the evening when I'm just hanging out. I will also hang one in the shower when I take one at night. The light is more than adequate and it doesn't mind moisture since it's designed for the tropics. It's light as a feather but built tough so a small child can carry it around easily. With up to 8 hours of light on low, makes for a nice bright night light. If you want an AC charger, just search for "Nokia AC-3U" on Amazon and get one for a few bucks. The battery can be replaced (if needed) with a standard 3.6v NMH rechargeable cordless phone type "2/3AAA". Just unscrew the base from the top to replace. The only trick is the threads are tight and it takes some effort. I thought it was sealed at first.
Oh yes, profits from your purchase help the d.light mission to bring light to the developing world. You can get it from dlight design directly at the same price and get free shipping to boot.
Their mission statement:
"Enable households without reliable electricity to attain the same quality of life as those with electricity. We will begin by replacing every kerosene lantern with clean, safe and bright light".
Long and the short of it: D.light lanterns are awesome! Hands down, these are the best power outage lanterns available, and at a great price. I just placed an order for a few more. These are far more valuable than battery-eating flashlights when facing a sustained power outage.
It has different brightness modes, charges quickly (a red indicator light shows you how well it's charging -- the brighter, the more energy it is receiving for recharging), and conveniently can be carried around camp.
Tip: you can easily mount this light to the wall by aligning the solar panel to the wall and flipping the carry handle to the other side. This is difficult to describe, but be aware that it's available. Think of the light being this character: /, and the wall being this: |. The light can be mounted as such: /|
Extremely good product to have in your home for emergencies.
If you want a charger for these, they use a standard Nokia phone charger which can be picked up cheap here on Amazon or elsewhere.
