I bought this for a trip to Glacier NP. I really did feel better having it along. I bought a holster for it too just because if I was going to have it I thought I'd have it easily accessible. I saw a lot of people with them in the water bottle pockets of backpacks, but I have a hard time imagining you'd get to it in time if you needed it. We saw a grizzly from a few hundred yards on the Grinnell Glacier trail and through binoculars it's easy to see those are some big bastards. From information I gleaned from the internet and from all the literature I got and saw in the park the consensus from people who work and live around bears is that bear spray is the best deterrant over a handgun or otherwise. I'd feel much safer in a hiking group of individuals with this product than next to one of the mouth breathing, .44 toting in a chest holster jabronies you see on the internet. The safety clip is glow in the dark, which was kind of neat too. Get a quality holster, mine is almost broken already. Comparison photo of it next to the gf's hair products......or a sleeper of a prank....who knows...Update: Well it finally happened. I sprayed myself. Took this along on an elk hunt in colorado. I had it on the hip belt of my pack in a mystery ranch bear spray holster and when crawling through some brush the safety clip must have pulled out. When back at the truck I tossed my pack in, and when setting another item back there I heard a faint psst, maybe less than a second long. I had just enough time to say "what the f*** was that" before I was on my knees heaving. Thankfully it only lasted 30 seconds or so before I could breathe normally again. Didnt get any in my eyes also. I would describe it as very peppery and spicy, not as chemically as I would have expected. Kind of what I would imagine it would feel like to inhale a baggie of peppercorns whole.

As an avid outdoors woman, I spend a fair amount of time camping and hiking - often in places where few humans go. This sets me up for encounters with wild animals. While I am an ardent animal lover and absolutely love being that deeply entrenched in the natural world, I do understand the potential dangers this poses.

Enter Frontiersman Bear Spray! This can of pure pain is absolutely essential for anyone venturing deep into bear country. This is a very humane way to deter our caniform friends while still giving ourselves an opportunity to run away. As an animal and nature lover, the last thing I want to do is cause harm to a creature I love. This potent spray can also be used to deter other animals, including dogs, so it's actually a great thing for runners, day hikers, or anyone else who may come in contact with potentially aggressive animals.

Thankfully, I've never had to use it. Thus far, I've been able to extract myself from a situation using slow movements and a soothing tone. But I refuse to tempt fate and carry this spray with me at all times. I also do a quick test spray before each trip to make sure there's no clogs and that it's spraying smoothly. I HIGHLY recommend that you do the same. All you have to do is point the canister towards the ground and give a VERY brief spray - like less than a second. MAKE SURE THE WIND IS AT YOUR BACK!!! Otherwise, you're gonna get a taste of your own medicine!

And speaking as someone who accidentally sprayed herself in the face with Mace, it sucks severely. Hey, don't judge me! I was 5 and playing around in my grandmother's glove box while she ran in the gas station. They heard my shrill screams all the way inside, and my grandmother sprinted to the car. She yanked open the door and started shoving fistfuls of the slushy ice from the hood of the car. I'm not sure which was worse - the mace or the frigid, kinda sharp slush. But whatever - I got a trip to the candy store! My point is - be careful. Both when you test and in the unfortunate event you ever have to use it.

Despite my early childhood trauma, I highly recommend this bear spray! I've used it on multiple trips and have never had a single issue with clogging or flow. The pressure is good which allows the spray to be directed far from you - an important safety feature. The glow in the dark safety pin is also a great feature for taking nighttime trips to the outhouse (or nearest tree).

Enjoy nature but give her the respect she deserves!

I bought this bear spray in 2018 and never had to use it until last week. I hike alone often and always carry my bear spray, just in case. The other day I was hiking down, heard a loud rustling, and then saw a good-sized, black bear heading toward my path. After a few choice words, I popped off the trigger lock and started shouting at the bear, which was moving toward me - not aggressively, but still getting too close for my comfort level. After shouting, “I’m gonna spray you” several times, which seemed to confuse the bear but didn’t deter it from moving in toward me, I finally sprayed in the bear’s direction. Just the sound of the spray made the bear turn and run. I’m not sure if any of the spray actually made it to the bear, but with a 30’ range, it’s likely it did. Either way, the bear hauled away in a different direction. Needless to say, this stuff really works. I’m ordering a back-up now!

I can't really comment on how well it works as I never had to use it. Which I am happy about. It is a convenient size that fit right in the side pocket of my pack where it was easy to reach. The instructions are pretty good and there are videos online that explain the usage. One thing I learned is that these have an expiration date. I had one of these for several years thinking it would just last forever if I didn't use it.
I read a story of a person that thought this was repellent and sprayed it on like mosquito spray. Don't do that. This is a defensive weapon. Think of mace.
