* Original Review*
Five months of use and I'm still running into the same recurring problems with the WD Sync software. It'll stop syncing intermittently, showing a "No internet connection detected" message while my computer clearly has internet access. When it's not that it hangs at "Signing in to MyCloudEX2Ultra" or it reports that the device is missing. I've tried rebooting the device, adjusting settings within the Dashboard, adjusting settings on the router, adjusting firewall/malware settings on my computer and uninstalling and reinstalling the WD Sync software numerous times - nothing works. A firmware update didn't help, either. The software just appears to be extremely temperamental and unpredictable. When it does work, it's great, and automatically syncs and backs up files between my desktop and laptop as expected. Unfortunately, however, I'm frequently forced to use the My Cloud web interface to manually upload or retrieve files. At least I can say that the hardware has been reliable and I haven't experienced any data corruption or loss like other users have reported. Still, this system isn't exactly working as expected and the software issues are really frustrating. I'm aware that numerous other users have reported similar problems but, unfortunately, it appears that the support Western Digital offers is severely lacking, and user-run support forums are confusing, irrelevant or lead to dead-ends.
I had RAID turned off because I wanted to actually get 16TB of capacity, not 8. Recently I just received a message that one of the drives was failing the self-check. So I immediately turned the NAS off and ordered a replacement drive. Well here's where it gets fun. I have a new drive, and can put it in the port, but I have no way to recover the old data from the old drive onto the new drive.
What's more - the NAS creates a shared volume across both drives so now that the old drive has been swapped out, I have no way of accessing the data that was on the good drive either. Effectively, there's no data transfer or recovery tools available. And if you contact WD (which I did) they sent me a link to a guide telling you how to insert a new drive. I explained that I am capable of inserting the new drive, but I want to still have the 16TB of data that was on my device - not just reformat the whole thing and start over. I was told I needed to contact some third-party data recovery company and pay for that service because they don't support data transfer/recovery and couldn't/wouldn't help me.
So in the end, I now have potentially lost 16TB of data and WD is 100% useless. There is no way I will ever buy another product from them with that level of "support".
Pro: easy to set up. Works ok.
Cons: uses a proprietary interface which really, really sucks. There isn’t an alternative and you cannot access this from multiple devices on your home network like a shared drive or nas. Everything goes over the internet, to the WD drive, back over the internet to whatever device you use to access the data. You cannot link to the data directly. You are trapped in that interface. Think that over. Read up before you buy.

Cons: crappy proprietary software, slow to wake up, admin UI is so bad that most ppl (including myself) opt for SSH into the server directly
I put in 8TB of WD's own NAS grade hard drives and ran a RAID 1 setup. After a year of very minor use of only backing up pictures and documents, this piece of crap started to max out CPU at 100% from God knows what. Cannot access the UI - opening up the login page takes 10 min, another 10 min to login then it just dies. I guess I'll just switch to cloud based storage options and never buy another WD product in my life again.
But the philosophy of this product to me, is accessing to your cloud network remotely and use the benefits of this personal HDD.
I uploaded some of my personal files which need to access it remotely and also tried to set a hierarchy for this, spent hours to categorize layer and tried to link with my phone as backup storage of my pictures.
My experience for this was disaster , I just wasted all my times and money for this.
This is some bullet major issues:
- This device is offline most of the time. so you need to physically restart it and wait for 15-20 minutes to rebooted.
- 4 of 5 tries to remotely connect to this Failed. ( Error : Your device is offline! )
- Long time process of restarting ( 15-20 minutes)
- Backup folders and layers were not managed properly and most of the time will be restored to the first
settings.
- Layers/ Hierarchies will be replaced to the default settings.
- Not a routine software update from support team to fix the issues
- No active customer support for share and fix all this issues.
(Update after 1 year use: My issue to access this device and process time getting worse and worse and worse )
Initial set up is very easy. Just follow their online instructions and you will get it running easily with their basic features. I use it mainly for remote file transfer/backup (mainly photos), and Plex. To set up Plex, if you are not an experienced user, it might take some trial and error to get it working properly (involved router port forwarding etc); but like everything else it is a learning process and I find it quite interesting, and rather satisfying when it works!
I read someone recommend cat6 or 7 cable to improve the performance. I'm using cat5 and am already happy with it, and will consider getting cat6 or 7 to see if there really is a difference.
There are many more features and add-ons that I can install. When I have time I'd love to explore them.
Overall if you are new to NAS I recommend it as it is easy to install and so far it is running good and quite reliable. Put it in your Wishlist, hopefully you will get a notification that it is on sale!
