Audeze LCD-3 Planar Magnetic Headphones with Leather Earpads and Travel Case
Audeze started in 2008 in a garage (of course!) when its founders came across a revolutionary flexible circuit material developed for NASA. Realizing this could be a great advance in planar magnetic technology, they first started to make pro audio PA speakers, but dropped this project and started making headphones – the LCD-1.
Taking this first headphone to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, it was a tremendous hit, and that success launched the company. Hanging on that garage wall was the 2001 Space Odyssey poster, and that inspired the company’s name. The founders wanted a name that had something to do with a “journey through audio,” so Odyssey would be perfect, and that’s how the name Audeze (pronounced “odyssey”) was born.

They bring new life to music that I thought I knew.
Some people find them heavy but I enjoy listening to them for hours on end with no fatigue.
I can't say how they compare to other headphones in the same price bracket, but I'm certainly very happy that I bought them.
The materials used most definitely feel fitting of the price tag, there is almost no plastic used. Pretty much everything you touch is either wood, metal, or lamb skin leather. All the wood, leather, and metal though end up making them quite heavy, especially when compared to say the Sennheiser HD800S's which use a lot of plastic. The use of plastic though keeps them very light, to the point I can wear them all day comfortably (As I side note I did prefer the sound signature of the LCD-3's more then the HD800S's). The weight was ultimately a deal breaker for me though, and why I ended up returning them. I personally can't justify a pair of $2,000 headphones that I can only wear for an hour or two at a time before I really want to take them off due to the weight.
If you don't think you will mind the weight, or never use your headphones for long periods of time I think they are a great pair of headphones, and would recommend them in that situation.
I think it sounds more detailed than the HD800 and better resolving. Even the soundstage is about the same; I don't really think the HD800 sounds much wider. But the LCD3 images more accurately than the HD800. The best imaging I've ever heard with a superior sense of depth to the sound. The LCD's mids make the HD800 sound distant and hollow, almost tinny they are so much better on the LCD-3. The mids are nice and forward and lush, absolutely perfect. The highs are perfect too and sound better than the HD800; they are crisper and more detailed with things like cymbals. The LCD-3 does everything better than the HD800. The LCD-3 sounds like what I wished the HD800 sounded like when I bought them as was so disappointed. All my complaints about the HD800 are solved by the LCD-3. It's an infinitely better headphone even though it cost about a 1,000 dollars more. Trust me, the price difference is worth every penny. The HD800 is overrated and not nearly as good as the LCD-3 in any way including soundstage. The soundstage on the LCD-3 is just as big. Skip the HD800 and buy and LCD-3 instead and you will actually get the quality that you expect from such an expensive headphone. The LCD-3 might be the best sounding headphone ever made; it has no sonic flaws in any way that I can hear. Even though I've never heard the Stax SR009, LCD-4, Sennheiser Orpheus or other much higher priced headphones. But at 2,000 dollars the LCD-3 has no competition. I listened to the cheaper LCD-2 and it sounded good too but the LCD-3 sounds better.
The only problem with the LCD-3 is that it's a tiny bit heavy but not that bad. The HD800 is more comfortable than the LCD-3 but I am happy with the fit of the Audeze. The weight does not bother me and It feels fine after wearing it for hours. In fact, the more I wear them the more comfortable they become. They just feel different than the HD800. The HD800 feels like it's floating over your head and disappears. The LCD-3 has a subtle suction effect over your ears and it feels like soft pillows against your head. While the HD800 feels like it disappears the LCD melts into you and almost seems to gently huge your ears. They are very comfortable in their own unique way irregardless of their weight. Besides the fit, I also wish the carrying case was deeper. With the headband expanded and the cable attached you cannot close the case. To close the case you have to remove the cables which would be a pain. So I just store them with the lid cracked open, no big deal. One more tiny complaint is that Audeze stopped including a balanced cable. They use to give you two cables, a 1/4 inch jack and a balanced. The decided to remove the balanced because they upgraded the 1/4 cable to a more premium cord. It's a nicer cord than the original but still kind of thin and flimsy making me worry about breaking it.
Nonetheless, if you are seeking the highest quality sound in existence you might find it with the Audeze LCD-3. It's the best sound I've ever heard and I've listened to all kinds of expensive high end speakers and headphones and lots of live performances and nothing comes close to the LCD-3. When people say they sound like a $40,000 set of speakers, they are telling the truth. I don't know how anything could sound better than these. The big problem with them is the price. At almost $2,000 dollars, are they worth it? Maybe, if you have the money and want the very best. Question is, how much better are the LCD-4 and Stax SR-009 and such? Considering diminishing returns, I suspect they are all very close making the LCD-3 sort of a bargain I suppose.
