The Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Mid-Side Shotgun Mic Capsule
Dial it in
The SSH-6 stereo mid-side shotgun capsule includes a super-directional microphone for picking up sound in the center, as well as a bidirectional side mic for picking up sounds from the left and right. With an SSH-6 attached to your H5, H6, or Q8, you can capture dialogue with the mid (center) mic, and then blend in the desired amount of environmental sound captured by the side mic in postproduction.
- Mid-side shotgun mic capsule for the Zoom H5 and H6 Handy Recorders and the Q8 Handy Video Recorder
- Allows Mid-Side recording, enabling the width of the stereo image to be adjusted during recording or in postproduction, while maintaining full mono compatibility
- Advanced digital signal processing for the pickup power of a conventional shotgun mic in a unit only half the size
- Perfect for film, video, and live theater applications
- Analog-style gain control for fast setting of input level
- 5-volt preamp minimizes distortion even at high volumes
- Includes hairy windscreen for reduction of wind noise
The best of both worlds
Shotgun mics provide a pinpoint center image, and mid-side recording is a great way to capture realistic stereo images which are fully mono-compatible. In situations where the ambient sound is too intrusive, the level of the SSH-6 'side' mic can be reduced even in postproduction to make narration or dialogue captured by its 'mid' mic easier to hear.
Use the right microphone for the job
Professional photographers and videographers choose the right lens to capture the optimum visual image. Why should audio be any different? Zoom's unique system of interchangeable input capsules allow you to always use the right microphone for the audio recording you're creating. The capsules snap on in seconds, allowing them to be swapped out as easily as the lens of a camera.
Zoom provides plenty of variety, too: Two different X/Y stereo mics for live music and concert recording, two different mid-side mics (one standard and one shotgun) for film and videography, two types of shotgun mics (one mono and one stereo), even an expander capsule that allows you to connect two additional external microphones or line-level sources.
SGH-6 Shotgun Mic Capsule
The monophonic SGH-6 Shotgun mic capsule allows dialogue and narration to be recorded at a distance, without an obtrusive mic in the scene, making it perfect for film and video shoots, live theater, and ENG (electronic newsgathering) applications.

The performance is tomorrow, and I'm going to make a decent recording from terrible location.
(disclaimer - for those of you who can immediately tell that this is the sound of a lesser mic, you are of course correct. That's not the point. The point is, in THIS particular situation, this mic outperforms the big boys. Please spare me unpleasant responses which restate the obvious - as soon as I can fly a mic in a good placement, it won't be this one - but until then, this was a fantastic $149 investment.)
Having gushed so much, there is one serious problem with the mic that I hope a firmware fix is possible. When I used it yesterday with other mics going into the other four channels (all with phantom power on), every time I changed the gain on the SSH6, the other channels would go crazy with loud hissy distortion which I could only get rid of by taking it out of record completely and powering off. This really limits its usefulness as a multitrack recorder. I'll work on contacting Zoom about this and put an update on this review when I know something. In spite of this big flaw, I'm giving it five stars - it is an invaluable tool in my gadget bag.
The pickup pattern on this microphone is like a slim triangle...sound falls off from the sides so that the source in front gets paid the most attention.
The item is very well made, and feels extremely sturdy. I wouldn't allow it to be dropped multiple times though as its most likely aluminum and has some soft elements to it. It will scratch or dent if you are not careful...and like to drop it on surfaces like cement.
The build quality is great. Its mostly metal, and just feels sturdy. You do have to be careful with connecting it to the body of the Zoom, though, as there is some plastic involved with the coupling mechanism.
Overall, this is a solid piece of professional quality gear.
