Joe Khamisi is a Kenyan author splitting his time between Kenya and the United States. His main interest is in non-fiction. He graduated from the University of Maryland (University College) at College Park in 1988 with a BSc. degree in Journalism and Government and has worked with several Kenyan and Tanzanian publications as a reporter and editor. He also worked in the Kenya Government as a Foreign Service Officer in Paris, Addis Ababa, and Windhoek. For ten years he was a Correspondent for a number of news organizations including the UPI, the Independent Newspaper Group of South Africa, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation and spent eight years in the Africa Division of the Voice of America in Washington DC. He was also a Member of Parliament in Kenya. His first book was The Politics of Betrayal: Diary of a Kenyan Legislator, which was warmly received both in Kenya and in the Diaspora. His second book, published in 2014, is his autobiography, Dash Before Dusk: A Slave Descendant's Journey in Freedom. On 7 April 2016, Khamisi released The Wretched Africans, a narrative on the slave trade in Eastern and Central Africa which pays tribute to the thousands of Africans who perished in the 19th century slavery.
