"... As the American War of Independence ended and new Loyalist settlers came to what is now New Brunswick, the francophones of Caraquet banded together to secure title to their property and avoid a second expulsion. Frances Gionet was chosen to travel to Halifax to ensure the British colonial administration recognized their settlement on the Acadian Peninsula. He made the entire journey on foot, and the document he secured for 14,000 acres of land for 33 local families became later known as the Great Caraquet Land Grant." Francois Gionet is the first signature on the famed Grant. Other history I have read, including that contained in this book, stated the land grant procured 14,150 for thirty-four families. Yes, I am proud of my maternal roots dating back to Francois Gionet and deeply grateful to Alexandre Jean Gionet for his endeavors to link us all to our heritage through his labors.
I had the pleasure of meeting Alex J. Gionet at a family reunion when the book was first published.
I can not imagine the amount of research that went into the finished book, but I remember that everyone in our family received surveys to fill out to aid Alex in his research. It brings joy to those of us who are part of the Gionet family, to have such a wonderful resource. Alex is passionate about genealogy and his effort is appreciated.
