At the age of twenty, Judith Thomas is offered a scholarship to begin a Masters’ degree at the University of Aberystwyth, and it is in that year of 2007 that she begins a diary which will record her life until April, 2009. This embraces her discovery of love, the recent economic turmoil, and her musings on topics such as mysticism and our continuing penchant for warfare. Initially reluctant to take up her father’s request to translate a 17th century Welsh ‘Testament’ written by a distant ancestor, Judith finds support in a Welsh language group, leading to the collective unravelling of a story of love, bravery and destruction. Events relating to the execution of purported witches, the English Civil War, and the plague in Eyam are written as if by one who has experienced them first-hand. After completing the translation Judith discovers a lineage of her family living in the same farmhouse as the author of the Testament three-and-a-half centuries before. She also finds that genetic traits of her ancestors have lived on; she and her new-found ‘cousin’, Ann, share an uncommon ability to read truth or falsehood in people they meet and Ann has the same gift of song as her distant namesake.

A Diary with a Difference by Martin A. Line consists of not one diary, but two, and each stands out as ‘different’ for what it covers, what it conveys, and how it is told. The main voice in the novel is that of a young woman named Judith Thomas, who receives two books from her parents. One is a diary of blank pages, which she sets out to fill—and the other is a copy of a seventeenth-century testament written in Welsh, which her father asks her to translate into English. The testament was written by one Jane McCarthy, whom Judith’s father believes to be their ancestor. As Judith works on the testament with the aid of those in her Welsh language class, a centuries-old saga of hardship, controversy, and desperate measures unfolds. At the same time, Judith’s life begins to take on new shape, and her once bland existence is spiked with some challenges of its own. From witchcraft, civil war, terrorism, and untimely death, to romance, familial integrity, divine gifts, and much more, the tale of these two ladies, taken together, carries readers throughout history and recent current events, across a veritable landscape of human emotion, experience, and thought.

I enjoyed this book that is an historical novel tracing fascinating parts of his family history which illuminates that part of history for us all. As a midwife I was particularly pleased and sorry to see the way those wise women were treated as witches in a baby was born deformed or dead. I think this still happens for midwives who practise home births and really should stop.

A Diary with a Difference by Martin Line is an interesting juxtaposition of two diaries - a contemporary one by Judith Thomas, a slightly reserved 20-year-old but with a keen eye for political comment, and the 17th century account by Jane McCarthy, one of Judith’s forbears, which tells of witchcraft and how her cousin was tried as a witch in hysterical times. Both are interesting writers who capture detail and the atmosphere of their times convincingly. As Judith digs deeper she finds a lot of connections with Judith and discovers some powers she never knew she had. A further connection between them is the farmhouse where both historic and modern action takes place. Both diarists face challenges and become stronger as a result as they strive to achieve the goals that circumstances dictate they set for themselves.
Martin Line handles the two time-lines well. The narrative slips easily between the two without it every seeming contrived or clumsy. He times the jumps expertly too, keeping us intensely interested in both stories and driven to keep reading. He creates complex, realistic characters that we can relate to and sympathise with during their struggles. Line’s writing style makes the story seem effortless and smooth but there are very strong undercurrents to this novel. Atmosphere is conveyed indirectly and understatedly in the hands of the two self-contained narrators with incredible effect. We learn a lot about history and culture without realising it and absorb the worlds that are created for us. This is a thoughtfully written and thought-provoking book.
