Salvation. Who Decides?
A Clear Presentation of God's Sovereignty and Man's Responsibility
How can we be confident of the promise in Romans 8:39 that "nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of Christ our Lord"?
Dr. Doug Erlandson answers this question in What the Bible Says About Salvation and the Sovereignty of God. Written in a lively, easy-to-understand way, the book begins with the implications of Jesus' final words at Calvary, "It is finished." Erlandson then contrasts the answers that Arminian and Reformed (Calvinist) Christians give concerning what Christ accomplished on the cross and the basis for our salvation.
Five Crucial Questions
- Are we able to respond to the Gospel prior to the Holy Spirit working in us?
- Is our salvation solely a matter of God's sovereign good pleasure and will?
- Did Christ die to make salvation possible for everyone or to atone for the sins of his people?
- Is our salvation a cooperative effort? Or is it God's work from first to last?
- Can we lose our salvation?
˃˃˃ What does the Bible say?
In discussing these questions, Erlandson examines the Arminian and Reformed answers and shows why the Reformed position is more consistent with Scripture. The final chapter talks about the great comfort the Reformed view of salvation provides to believers.

A Must-Read Book on Worship
It's Not Just About the Music
In Spiritual Anorexia: How Contemporary Worship is Starving the Church, Dr. Doug Erlandson presents a balanced but devastating critique of the contemporary-style worship model and shows how this type of worship deprives Christians of the feast of true corporate worship.
Drawing from personal experience and extensive research into the history of Christian worship, Dr. Erlandson analyzes the motivations for contemporary-style worship and assesses its strengths and weaknesses. He argues persuasively that corporate worship should be a dramatic presentation of the Gospel. Historically, Christian worship has included distinctive elements in making this presentation. These elements include the call to worship, recitation of the creeds, confession of sin, absolution, Christ-centered preaching and a benediction.

This is not a "Let's go back to singing only hymns" plea, but a critique aimed toward the mindless, vacuous, repetitive, empty types of songs that often pass for worship in many churches. Review by "Yarn Mama"
I found this book to be an excellent critique of contemporary worship. Not only does he lay out what is wrong with this style of worship and how it is damaging the church, he lays out the history of worship and what it is meant to be. Reviewed by "Melissa"

“Making Decisions in Everyday Life,” by Doug Erlandson, provides a foundation for rational decision making by examining the general principles we need to know to optimize the outcome of the decision-making process. The book explains in a nontechnical way what probability is and how to determine probability and weigh risk and reward in order to achieve the best consequences.
Having stated these principles, Erlandson applies them to the major decisions we face during the course of a lifetime. Among the issues covered are choosing a college, finding the right job, going into business for oneself, spending and investing wisely, exercising, and deciding when to take Social Security. The book concludes with chapters on games and gambling and an analysis of Pascal’s Wager and its relevance.
“Making Decisions in Everyday Life” is intended for a general audience and does not presuppose familiarity with probability theory or statistical analysis.
The Sacramental Split
Learn why the subject of the sacraments has divided the church for more than 500 years.
What the Bible Says About the Sacraments presents the disputes surrounding the nature and purpose of the sacraments. This disagreement over the sacraments not only separated Luther from Rome, but it also split the Protestant reformers into at least three separate camps. Five centuries later the controversy over the sacraments still rages and divides the various branches of Christianity. This book presents an overview of the controversy, sorts out the options, and on the basis of what the Bible teaches, examines the strengths and weaknesses of each position.
Here's a preview of what's in the book
- What is a sacrament? Why do the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches believe in seven sacraments and Protestants just two?
- Is baptism necessary for salvation?
- Should infants be baptized? Should we baptize by sprinkling, pouring, or immersion?
- Are the bread and wine of the Lord's Supper transformed into the body and blood of Christ?
- How often should the Lord's Supper be celebrated? Who should be allowed to partake?
˃˃˃ Who should read this book?
What the Bible Says About the Sacraments is designed to help believers grow in their understanding of the sacraments. Not only will pastors and worship leaders benefit from reading it, but so too will all Christians who want to gain a better appreciation of these acts of Christian worship. The book is written for a general audience, with comments of a more technical nature placed in endnotes.
