I am about halfway through the book and am amazed that anyone could write this much

I actually haven't finished the book but am reading it a few pages at a time to lead me into establishing a habit of meditating for at least 30 minutes early in the morning before my day gets started, and I have found it to be extremely motivating, reassuring, and helpful. I began the day before Lent started and so far haven't missed a day and actually look forward to having this time in silence before God with Finley's book as a sort of spiritual guide. I am about halfway through the book and am amazed that anyone could write this much, both movingly and beautifully, as a guide and encouragement for anyone who wants to practice meditation/contemplation.

It surpasses previous favorites, Thurman, Frenette, Keating, Adyashanti.. it is EXHAUSTIVE in its reach and detail, including the issues that arise along the journey. Truly, a call to Lectio all on its own, as my favorites have been before this. Bravo Uncle Jim for a brilliant and tireless gathering of all sorts to bring this work into fruition. I will give and recommend this book to those I serve.

Of all the books on Meditation I have read and I have read many, this book is the most human and loving. James Finley walks the walk, it comes through on page after page. I am sure his modesty will make him very uncomfortable about that statement but I do not say that about anyone very often. If you are looking for a book that will assist you in all of the issues that arrive in learning to meditate, this is it.Finley is truly knowledgeable. He knows the difficulty that people encounter and he truly assists because he comes from the heart and you can feel it as you read it through. I cannot imagine this not becoming an enduring classic.

After hearing Jim Finley speak my interest was piqued to learn more about meditation from a Christian point of view. This set of cd's is very easy to absorb at your own pace, either slow or more regularly. I particularly like the guided meditations he offers. It has helped me calm my mind before bed and have a restful night sleep, when otherwise I may have waken in the middle of the night.

James Finley is truly an excellent teacher in meditation and the contemplative life. He offers clear and simple guidelines, and uses wonderful images to help us visualize that which cannot be seen with human eyes. I also highly recommend his audio teachings on Thomas Merton and Meister Eckhart. I never tire of listening to them.

Finley is simply fascinating. Every word he writes is enlightening--even challenging. How much I would love to sit at his feet and learn more! I'm so grateful for this book that is opening up the world of Christian meditation for me. Ever since I read Brother Lawrence's book The Practice of the Presence of God years ago I've wanted to experience a more contemplative spiritual life and to have a deeper relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. This book is helping me to have that experience.

Finley's book is exquisitely written. Many who write books on Centering Payer and Meditation are not writers. And their writing can be cumbersome. Not so with Finley. He draws you right in with well crafted sentences. I recommend Finley to people who are relatively new to Centering Prayer because the writing flows so nicely and draws people in. Finley was a monk at Gethsemane Abbey and he took spiritual direction from Thomas Merton. Then Finley went on to have a family with two daughters. This makes his work readily accessible to a broad range of people with varied experiences. Highly recommended!
