“Madden provides a definitive and captivating biography of ‘The Boss.’” — Kirkus Reviews
“Definitive, indispensible.... A vivid and entertaining portrait.” — Sports Illustrated
From the Back Cover
No owner has changed the landscape of sports more than New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. From the moment he bought the team in 1973 for $10 million, Steinbrenner's monomaniacal pursuit was to restore the most fabled franchise in baseball history to its former glory. Today the New York Yankees are worth more than $1 billion and are once again world champions.
Award-winning sportswriter Bill Madden traces Steinbrenner from his early days in Cleveland through his years as a shipping magnate, a Nixon fund-raiser, and a champion horse breeder to the fateful moment when he bought the Yankees, even though his father disparaged George's desire to own a professional sports team as a "hobby." Over the next four decades, Steinbrenner's tumultuous reign included his epic battles with Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, even beloved Yankee captain Derek Jeter. His ruthless and free-spending tactics made him a lightning rod for controversy but they also paid off: Steinbrenner's Yankees have won seven championships and remain the gold standard in all sports. In the last few years, with his health declining, the Boss ceded control of the team to his sons, but not before lording over the team's historic transition from the House That Ruth Built to the House That George Built.
Throughout his three decades of covering the Yankees, Bill Madden has cultivated hundreds of sources at every level in the organization, from the many managers and front-office personnel Steinbrenner has fired to the bat boys who are ever present in the locker room. All of them have colorful stories about the man with whom they have enjoyed a love-hate relationship, but it is the Boss himself whose voice rises above the rest. And when Steinbrenner decided to give his final print interview, he spoke to Madden to set the record straight on his extraordinary life and career.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2010Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseGeorge Steinbrenner, Willie Mays and I have two things in common. We are all 79 years old and are all connected to baseball.
George Steinbrenner personifies success as an owner. Not a popular figure among his peers he nevertheless has achieved while others have failed. Possibly, money cannot buy happiness, but it can and did buy championships for the Yankees under Mr. Steinbrenner's stewardwhip. Money was always an issue but never an object. In spite of the enormous sums that were lavished on premium and (not so premium) players, the value of his investment in the 37 years since he bought the Yankees for $8 1/2 or $10 million (sic) has grown to an estimated 1 1/2 billion dollars today.
Willie Mays, arguably, was the best player of his era, the 1950's and '60's. A great hitter, consumate fielder and baserunner and the possessor of one of the strongest arms in the game. Perhaps with his effervescent personna combined with his natural talent for the game he might be judged as the most popular player of the past 75 years, if not of all time.
And me, well, I am a baseball fan and have been for more than 70 years. I grew up with the Dodgers, Willie was a Giant, and George a Yankee. All three teams lived together in New York for 5 plus decades although in three different boroughs.
George Steinbrenner, whose success can be measured by the result of financial expenditure was at best incorrigible and at worst, worse. He spent, hired, fired and rehired as was generally unpopular within the industry. That having been said, he was a great success in building the Yankee franchise to what it is today. Bill Madden tells it like it was and is, no holds barred, nothing left unsaid. This book is a wonderful depiction of the man, his cronies, his players, managers and coaches as well as a primer on "how championships are bought". He mostly got what he wanted but not the respect of those with whom he dealt.
Every fan is acquainted with Willie Mays. But this bio by James Hirsch puts it in perspective. Everything in this book is a terrific read from the smallest detail to his most obvious accomplishments. Willie was loved by every fan and still is in the hearts of those same fans and their children and grand children, almost 40 years after his retirement. This affection is captured page after page after page. Willie, #24 (Jackie wore #42) will forever be remembered for his affable laugh and pleasing demeanor.
As a fan I found these two books miles ahead of other biographies of sports personalities. They were interesting, superbly researched and objective. They she be in the library of every baseball fan.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2012Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI'm a long time NY Yankees MLB fan. I wanted to lean more about George Steinbrenner owner of the NY Yankees and CEO American Ship.
Bill Madden wrote a good book about George Steinbrenner and the lives he touched. The book read well and was a 457 page burner. I read in 3 days. It was very interesting, smooth writing and I had difficulty putting it down. Good B/W pictures too.
We see George growing up, good in hurdling track and field and going and graduating from college. He was a smart man. He is brought up in a military mind set of power and authority. We see his father owner of the Great Lakes American Ship and George helping. We see his interest in sports and uses an initial approx. $165K starting and through hard work builds a multi billion dollar NY Yankee empire. We see his American Ship co. brought down to Tampa Fl but goes bankrupt as too much government regulation and the company not being able to build 2 tankers for the US Navy on time and on budget.
Through multi partner George and others buy the NY Yankees from CBS for about $8.5 million. The other partners are bought out eventually and George builds a Yankees, NY Nets TV network, plus the Yankee team worth billions.
We see the ruthless management style of George the egotist having to constantly but in management style and not relying on his managers and general managers. We see him reneging on his word and trying to side step contracts and trading players and wheeling and dealing. Also fined many times from baseball commissioners, suspended from baseball with a felony conviction on Watergate/Nixon, and suspended again. We see the tremendous power on and off the field. Many many people hired and fired.
Bill Madden shows us George Steinbrenner as an egotistical management control freak who was willing to spend big money to try to get the best players, managers and general managers. however he expected to win the World Series forever and repeatedly gave his mangers and general managers the ax , many times non directly through intermediates. Many times he didn't have the decency to fire some one face to face ( example Yogi Berra). He fired Billy Martin repeatedly and had him as a Yo-Yo, also others and Lou Piniella and Joe Torre.
George did have feelings and went to many funerals and cried often. He gave millions to assorted charities. He did have a big heart.
We see the gigantic new NY Yankee stadium being built and the Tampa Legions Field stadium in Tampa Fl being built.
On reading the book I could not understand how any manager or general manager could put up with the abuse and degradation of people George dished out. I guess these managers, general managers, and players loved the game and George's big money and were willing to put up with his crap.
I developed a deep empathy and sorrow seeing George when old and dying, losing much of his memory, sickly and slender and giving up the Yankee control to his second oldest son. The lion of baseball down to a timid little lamb.
A complex man...egotistical, high profile micro manager, control freak but also at times a compassionate man who helped many people and gave millions to Charity, many times anonymously. Truly an amazing man. I gained much respect for Steinbrenner as a businessman but not how he treated people. A good book for any baseball fan, anyone wanting to study how an egotistical micro management control freak's mind works and someone at times compassionate and a huge charity giver. 4 stars

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe best book you'll ever read on Steinbrenner and his eccentric ways. This book has so many funny stories about George and his crazy antics that you'll laugh until it hurts. This book was so good I started passing it around to friends then realized I should buy another copy in case I didn't get the first one back!
Marc RangerReviewed in Canada on March 19, 20115.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any baseball fan
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI read Steinbrenner within a week. The 400 pages book was that good. While I went through it, I discovered why Steinbrenner acted like he did, litterally manipulating, abusing and crushing friends, allies or foes alike.
The author really did a nice job in portraying a complex, flawed and ovewhelming personnality like The Boss. I'd say that even if you were a loyal follower of the Yankees during Steinbrenner's tenure, you'll be able to learn, weight and appreciate the impact Steinbrenner had on his team and baseball in general.
A must read for any baseball fan.
