Editorial Reviews
From the Back Cover
The 45 record sleeve has long been viewed as a medium for design experimentation, a blank slate onto which designers could unleash their creativity and ingenuity. From the 1950s to the 1980s, before the 45 was replaced by the CD, and then in the 1990s, when grunge became the rage and 45s enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, 45 record–sleeve design combined photography, illustration, color, and typography with innovative bravado. For this reason, vintage 45 record sleeves today are sought-after collectibles by music buffs and designers alike.
Compiled by well-known designers and authors Spencer Drate and Judith Salavetz, Five Hundred 45s contains more than 500 examples of striking seven-inch record sleeve design across every genre of music and its great musicians—all reproduced at full size. This gorgeous book includes a foreword by Lenny Kaye, music critic and guitarist for the Patti Smith Group, as well as essays offering diverse perspectives on the subject by avid collectors, industry insiders, and designers. The book is organized into thematic chapters, with a mix of dynamic, visually inspiring pairings on every spread. A discography at the back provides complete information for each sleeve, rounding out this highly collectible volume.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA little bit of every genre, each page is a life size reproduction of a single, artistically connected with the one next to it. Nice heavy stock, but it would be better if there were more-or any- notes about the choices, either musically or visually.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe idea behind the book is cool but the choice of records on display is a bit ordinary. Perhaps they should have broken the records down by era.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2010Format: PaperbackThis is an very expansive collection of 45 covers spanning decades ... it is beautifully and creatively put together, with discussions of the various art techniques used to create the works, and the impact this art has on the purchase of these records.
I would recommend this book to any art or music enthusiast - and it makes an incredibly cool coffee table addition :).
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2010Format: PaperbackWhat a great coffee table book. It's a wonderful ride on a 45 RPM cover sleeve time machine. Nice to see the sleeves of songs from the past and some quite contemporary ones juxtaposed in this unique manner. A-1 job by Spencer Drate & Judith Salavetz.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBought this for my son's birthday after seeing a review in the Observer. A brilliant book that 'does exactly what it says on the tin'. The size of a 45-rpm disc it's simply a collection of 500 cover designs from the earliest to the latest. Very well selected and reproduced. It has pride of place (with Rothman's Footie Yarbook) next to the toilet - both ideal books for times of serious reflection.
