Ava, a teenage girl living aboard the male-dominated deep space merchant ship Parastrata, faces betrayal, banishment, and death. Taking her fate into her own hands, she flees to the Gyre, a floating continent of garbage and scrap in the Pacific Ocean, in this thrilling, surprising, and thought-provoking debut novel that will appeal to fans of Across the Universe, by Beth Revis, and The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood. Internationally bestselling author Stephanie Perkins called it "brilliant, feminist science fiction."

Ava is the captain's daughter. This allows her limited freedom and a certain status in the Parastrata's rigid society—but it doesn't mean she can read or write or even withstand the forces of gravity. When Ava learns she is to be traded in marriage to another merchant ship, she hopes for the best. After all, she is the captain's daughter. But instead, betrayal, banishment, and a brush with love and death are her destiny, and Ava stows away on a mail sloop bound for Earth in order to escape both her past and her future. The gravity almost kills her. Gradually recuperating in a stranger's floating cabin on the Gyre, a huge mass of scrap and garbage in the Pacific Ocean, Ava begins to learn the true meaning of family and home and trust—and she begins to nourish her own strength and soul. This sweeping and harrowing novel explores themes of choice, agency, rebellion, and family, and after a tidal wave destroys the Gyre and all those who live there, ultimately sends its main character on a thrilling journey to Mumbai, the beating heart of Alexandra Duncan's post–climate change Earth. An Andre Norton Award nominee.

Such a great book. I've seen some other reviews that mentioned some of the few "odd" phrases and words making the story hard to follow and feeling disconnected - I did NOT find this to be true. With a little bit of world-knowledge, respect for different cultures, and use of context clues, I can assure you this will not be a problem for you and instead add to the story, as it did for me. You may not like reading about the idea of women being viewed as little more than breeders as on the ship in this story, but guess what? That's still a reality in many places in our world today. Although set in the future, many of the challenges certainly ring true and will surely resonate with the readership. I felt the book was very well written, easy to follow, and a good read. Whether you are a feminist or just an individual with respect for people other than just yourself, you will enjoy this book. I am excited to read this author's second book (focused on Miyole) and I cannot wait to see what else this author puts out.

The first couple of chapters made me think this book would be terrible; with nothing but garbled words and a heavy-handed message. Yet, when I got into it I couldn't put this book down! I love the realistic way this book portrays earth's gravity in comparison to living in space. I also loved reading about the journey the main character went on and the self discovery angle of the story. This story is for people who are into drama, sci-fi, and women's coming-of-age stories.

Wonderfully described future earth, with a space dwelling girl who escapes danger and goes down to an earth that is completely foreign to her. It was fun exploring this different, but in some ways, very familiar earth through her eyes. Teenaged Ava has a series of adventures, starting on the ship she was born and raised on, her escape on a space station after she’s facing deadly consequences to innocent actions, to her arrival on earth with the pilot who rescues her. She almost dies from the gravity she’s never experienced before, but slow becomes stronger. When a tragedy befalls her new found friends on the Gyre, a floating island of garbage and plastic scrap, she escapes to India, where she hopes to find her maternal aunt. This was an such excellent adventure and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope to read the next book in the series, Salvage, very soon.

I have a few problems with this book. The plot was predictable even if the settings were imaginative. The characters were sort of slapped together. The main character, Ava, was full of inconsistencies. We are to believe that she grew up extremely sheltered and uneducated, yet within a span of months she was able to make the jump from fixing a milking machine to repairing and piloting a spaceship. Not to give up any big plot twists, but why would someone who grew up in such a conservative society that wouldn’t even allow girls to make eye contact with boys, think “OK, hell yeah, I’ll get naked and go skinny dipping in the desalination pond with some guy I barely knew four years ago.” I don’t buy it. And as much as the author tried to make her a strong person, really- didn’t this girl just get lucky and meet people who helped her at every turn?
In spite of that I kept reading. I realized it was because the plot was so safe and predictable. I recommend reading for 12 year old girls who are experiencing their first crushes and those who don’t want anything too challenging to read at the beach.

I was initially skeptical of the story. I've read both stories mentioned in the professional review and Handmaiden's Tale was a very pivotal story -- those were some big shoes to fill! As well, I was afraid it was a grindingly awful morality play couched in a teenage dystopia. However, this story was terrifically well-written and on-point regarding the difficulties of surviving a break with a close-knit but suffocating culture. Five out of five for believable, wonderful characters. I hope this author writes several more adventures. I love the way the main character grows into her story. As for plot, there are more than a few unexpected, jolting turns, but the writer handled them back onto course by the end. The only detail I found implausible was how quickly the heroine learned to fly, but I guess that can always be chalked up to superior stabilizing/navigational technology. All in all, a wonderful read (this story was a bit Margaret Atwood, but more Ursula LeGuin ).

I loved this book, from beginning to end. It had everything I hoped it would - spaceships, future!Earth, the terminology associated with ships and machinery that makes Sci-Fi books that more authentic - and a tonne of others I never imagined - the dark and bright sides of Mumbai, heartwarming friendships, a kickass heroine who refuses to be beaten and grows as a person with every chapter. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this book.

Salvage is so many books, plots, and locations all rolled into one book and despite everything suggesting it should in no way work ... it works so well. The progression from place to place is natural, with reasoning instead of a random jump. It covers many areas of this new, post-climate-change Earth as well as the sky surrounding it, and builds an expansive and clear picture of the world in which Ava is living. Quite simply, Alexandra Duncan is a masterful world builder.

There were a few times when my reading lacked momentum but the world of Salvage drew me back, as well as my investment in Ava's future and her journey. At the beginning of the book I was urging her to speak out against her father and the society on her spaceship that was so clearly oppressing her - but she knew no different so of course she didn't, and though it frustrated me a little it was easy to understand why she'd remain silent, why she'd keep her thoughts unspoken. Good Parastrata women do not speak out.

It took being exiled from society and forced to flee her ship for Ava to see life beyond the limitations of the Parastrata, to see that she didn't have to be the girl she had been moulded into. Ava was beyond any words I have to describe her. I've never read a journey so vast and profound as hers. By finding herself in an unfamiliar, terrifying world with no friends or family to speak of and no way to survive, she finds herself. Despite experiencing grief and emotions that would cause most people to break down, she fights through it, and she refuses to be beaten. If you read this book for nothing else, read it for Ava. She's a girl like no other.
