Purchase options and add-ons
In this crackling alternate history thriller set in the years after World War II—the riveting sequel to The Darkest Hour—London detective John Rossett joins forces with his Nazi boss to save the commander’s kidnapped daughter as the Germans race to make the first atomic bomb.
With the end of the war, the victorious Germans now occupy a defeated Great Britain. In London, decorated detective John Henry Rossett, now reporting to the Nazi victors, lies in a hospital bed recovering from gunshot wounds. Desperate to avoid blame over the events that led to the shooting, his boss, Ernst Koehler, covers up the incident. But when Koehler’s wife and daughter are kidnapped by American spies, the terrified German turns to the only man he trusts to help him—a shrewd cop who will do whatever is necessary to get the job done: John Rossett.
Surviving his brush with death, Rossett agrees to save his friend’s daughter. But in a chaotic new world ruled by treachery and betrayal, doing the right thing can get a man killed. Caught between the Nazi SS, the violent British resistance, and Americans with very uncertain loyalties, Rossett must secretly make his way out of London and find Ruth Hartz, a Jewish scientist working in Cambridge. Spared from death because of her intellect and expertise, she is forced to work on developing the atom bomb for Germany. Though she knows it could end any hope of freedom in Europe and maybe even the world, Ruth must finish the project—if she, too, wants to survive.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2015The British Lion is the sequel is The Darkest Hour and Tony Schumacher has succeeded in the impossible, i.e. his sequel is even more riveting and engrossing than the original!. Inasmuch as it has not yet been published in the UK, I don't want to give out any plot details. Suffice it to say don't start the book at night because you will not want to put it down until it's finished and after you have read it your only question will be ":How long will it be until the next book in the series" The author manages to weave fictional and historical characters together so that you are engrossed in a totally plausible, albeit quite scary, alternative history.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2021The second entry in this original trilogy lags a bit behind the first book " The Darkest Hour". Perhaps the issue might be that the frightening premise of Nazi's victory over Great Britain lost some of it's novelty. Or it could be something else. Still, very good book, juggling multiple plot lines with an admirable skill. The second novel is resembling much more the thriller genre, more shootings, less anguish, more adrenaline, less insight. But that could, quite possibly, be my personal bias. I tend to prefer more procedure and less hormones. Many others might disagree, and who's to say who is right.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2016Tony Schumacher's extremely complex, sympathetic characters drive this sequel to "The Darkest Hour" through the twists and turns of a fiendishly clever plot. In the aftermath of a German victory in W.W. II, a former British war hero turned collaborator tries to find his moral center in a world where the shared humanity of adversaries leads to continually shifting alliances. I recommend reading "The Darkest Hour" first, but this book stands on its own legs and paws the air with spirit, unassisted by further support. This reader looks forward eagerly to the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2017Once I got the premise of the story that this was an alternate reality of W.W. 2, I was able to understand the story. It just goes to show that we, as humans will hopefully do the right thing. I liked the book. Thanks to the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2016Mr.Schumacher's second novel, THE BRITISH LION, does not disappoint. He has the knack of keeping his readers on the edge of their seats. His book also presents his readers with a dilemma. Who can they root for? The Americans, The British Resistance or the British Underworld --each has a dark side.
I hope Mr. Schumacher has plans to continue with his hero, John Rossett.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2019I enjoyed The Darkest hour--unique protagonist, noirish pretense and vibe. Shades of "Man in the High Castle" and Philip Kerr. That said, I think the plot for that one was kind of thin. Here, the opposite problem--there were way too many threats. I counted at least four different groups trying to take down the protagonist, John Rossett, who became a bit two-dimensional. Not only was it hard to follow, more than once, it didn't make sense.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2016A roller coaster ride and page turner, could not put it down. Tore through it in two days of beach reading in the Cayman Islands. What fun,
can't for the next adventures of John Rossett.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2017Fascinating and well-crafted narrative set in an alternative universe that could well have come about, but thankfully didn't...

Grey WolfReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 2, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Grey in every sense and Great
A great gritty story set in Nazi-occupied Britain where no side is black and no side is white and all the shades of grey in between are fighting each other for dominance. I could see the action in my mind's eye which is always a good indicator of a book well-written, and a scene well-set. In this miasma of conflicting loyalties, our hero, if such he be, must make decisions and try to serve all interests so as not to end up dead.
Guy RobertsReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 20184.0 out of 5 stars Great alternative history
A Nazi occupied Britain - OK, it's been done a million times. SSGB, Fatherland and many more. However, this is definitely one of the better ones. The chief protagonist, John Rossett, the "British Lion" is a war hero with a Victoria Cross to his name, tough as nails, scared of nobody. He's also a collaborator who worked with the Nazis to round up Jews and deport them to concentration camps. These are the stories of how John Rossett starts to regain his humanity. Great stuff.
Rich MReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 5, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Read all three books on the bounce
Fantastic read. Gritty and very absorbing. Lots of intriguing characters and grey gloomy atmospherics. Read all three books in a row and feel a void without the next. Hopefully, there will ay least be a fourth in sequence. Great stuff
Rob007Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 21, 20174.0 out of 5 stars All round good read.
Good interesting story. Book 2 in a good series. Like the backdrop of UK under German rule not long after the war. The characters are ok but can't say you warm to any of them. Action, fast pace story and easy read. I like it.
Mrs K.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 30, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant author and service.
This is a gift for my husband. He likes the way he writes. Never having read the author before I can't really comment any further. But I shall read it in the future.
