Unchecked: The Untold Story Behind Congress's Botched Impeachments of Donald Trump Hardcover – October 18, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
A revealing, behind-the-scenes examination of how Congress twice fumbled its best chance to hold accountable a president many considered one of the most dangerous in American history. The definitive—and only—insider account of both Trump impeachments, as told by the two reporters on the front lines covering them for The Washington Post and Politico.
In a riveting account that flips the script on what readers think they know about the two impeachments of Donald Trump, Rachael Bade and Karoun Demirjian reveal how—and why—congressional oversight failed when it was needed most.
Unchecked weaves a vivid narrative of how House Democrats under the lead of a cautious speaker, Nancy Pelosi, hesitated for months to stand up to Trump—and then pulled punches in their effort to oust him in a misguided effort to protect themselves politically. What they left on the cutting room floor would come back to haunt them, as Republicans seized on their missteps to whip an uneasy GOP rank-and-file into line behind Donald Trump, abandoning their scruples to defend a president who some privately believed had indeed abused his power.
Even after Trump incited a mob to violently attack the Capitol—a day the authors recount in minute-by-minute, stunning detail — Democrats pressured their own investigators to forego a thorough investigation in the name of safeguarding the Biden agenda. And Republicans, fearful of repelling a base they needed for re-election, missed their best moment to turn their backs on a leader they secretly agreed was destructive to democracy.
Sourced from hundreds of interviews with all the key players, the authors of Unchecked pull back the curtain on how both parties pursued political expediency over fact-finding. The end result not only emboldened Trump, giving him room for a political comeback, but also undermined Congress by rendering toothless their most powerful check on a president: the power of impeachment. A dramatic and at times crushing work of investigative reporting, Unchecked is both a gripping page-turner of political intrigue and a detailed case study for historians and political scientists searching for answers about the unravelling of checks and balances that have governed American democracy for centuries.

“Bade and Demirjian deliver a granular examination of both Trump impeachments and the work of the January 6 committee. Their joint effort is a stinging indictment of what they see as Republican cravenness and Democratic ineptitude.” — Guardian (UK)
“Journalists Bade and Demirjian deliver a searing analysis of the ‘political calculations’ made by Democrats and Republicans that led to Donald Trump’s acquittal in two separate impeachment trials….a thorough and often riveting account.” — Publishers Weekly

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThese two women are no conspiracy theorists and stick to facts. They were on the scene and witnessed a lot. As a centrist political columnist, I already knew a lot which is in their book. Thus, I believe it reliable when their new information how Pelosi had polarized the nation to be accurate. They provide verifiable sources. You will not hear it on the Left Wing nor the Right Wing media both of whom have a financial stake in perpetuating the polarization.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUnchecked made a thorough attempt to portray the struggles both parties showed in making decisions between expedience and recognition of the seriousness of Trump's crimes. It showed the human emotions behind those decisions. But it ultimately proved the potential and real consequences of allowing impeachment to become a political tool rather than a means of checking a rogue President. Ultimately it succeeded in showing how both sides failed.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book does a very good job of giving you the background to the two impeachments of Trump. The authors give you a front row seat to the behind the scenes machinations of the two parties and the public aspects of the fight. The only weak link in the book is the authors' attempt to both sides the entire episode. The authors do correctly point out that the GOP was afraid of Trump and his hard core supporters. After January 6, McConnell and McCarthy knew that Trump had committed an impeachable offense but they lacked the courage to vote to convict. The authors criticize the Democrats for not sending subpoenas to witnesses and if only the correct witnesses had testified, Trump would have been convicted. That is magical thinking since Trump and the GOP would have rejected the subpoenas and dragged it out in the courts for months or even years. Moreover, even if some witnesses had testified, the GOP would have still supported Trump. Other than this less than convincing attempt to both sides the conviction of Trump, the book was well written and researched.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2023Format: HardcoverI found this book to be brilliantly written, educating the reader on the exasperating processes and rationale used in decision making inside our government. I had previously watched all impeachment proceedings and appreciated the accuracy with which these two talented authors relayed the numerous details. I was both baffled and saddened by decisions made by key lawmakers, and this book informs you on what went into those decisions. I also appreciate the analysis on what these impeachment outcomes have done to tear the fabric of our government and presidential oversight. Lastly, I think every American student should read this as part of their secondary education to gain an understanding of the impact of this on American history.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBrilliant book. Main takeaway is the pressure of political expediency. I put most of the blame for failure of 2 impeachments on republicans. They were terrified of political consequences and kept excusing trump behaviour then hoping he would fade from view. They could have banished him by finding guilty but he is still here because of their refusal.
