How to Think Like a Lawyer--and Why: A Common-Sense Guide to Everyday Dilemmas (Legal Expert Series) Paperback – February 22, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
A law professor and author teaches non-attorneys how to think like a lawyer to gain advantage in their lives—whether buying a house, negotiating a salary, or choosing the right healthcare.
Lawyers aren’t like other people. They often argue points that are best left alone or look for mistakes in menus “just because.” While their scrupulous attention to detail may be annoying, it can also be a valuable skill.
Do you need to make health care decisions for an aging parent but are unsure where to start? Are you at crossroads in your career and don’t know how to move forward? Have you ever been on a jury trying to understand confusing legal instructions? How to Think Like a Lawyer has the answers to help you cut through the confusion and gain an advantage in your everyday life. Kim Wehle identifies the details you need to pay attention to, the questions you should ask, the responses you should anticipate, and the pitfalls you can avoid. Topics include:
- Selling and buying a home
- Understanding employment terms
- Creating a will and health care proxy
- Navigating health concerns
- Applying for financial aid
- Negotiating a divorce
Wehle shows you how to break complex issues down into digestible, easier-to-understand pieces that will enable you to make better decisions in all areas of your life.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe book is short but to the point by a law professor on how to think like a lawyer.
Like Kingsfield in the Paper Chase, law school teaches using the Socratic Method of asking and answering questions. The B-I-C-A-Tsystem presented by Wehle which is a twist on the Feynman's technique of simplifying a problem to understand it.
- Break the problem down.
- Identify your values and your aim.
- Collect lots of knowledge.
- Argue both sides of each point.
- Tolerate the fact that people will disagree with your choice - and that you might feel conflicted.
Using actual cases, the author explains that many times in life it's not black and white but shades of gray and compromise. A solution to a problem may not be perfect and when others are involved you have to not only understand your side of the argument but the other side as well. A compromise moves things forward with no one is really happy but the problem is solved.
This process can really be useful in political and culture wars currently going on in the world.
Definitely worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseNot a lawyer, but I’ve always admired how lawyers argue and think. I took Kim Wehle’s LinkedinLearning course and was so excited to learn that she wrote a book on the same topic. However, I actually found the book to be more helpful and specific than the online course. I often refer back to this book to help me make smarter decisions. The formula presented in this book can help you eliminate your decision paralysis from any situation (legal or not). Kim Wehle does an excellent job breaking down the steps and showing practical examples to explain a lawyer’s mindset for everyday life issues. The paperback is pretty thin too, and can be taken anywhere!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is hard to write a review about. First, it's not a book to teach yourself how to be an amatuer lawyer. It's more about teaching problem solving skills. Secondly, my reason for reading this is that we're having another bizarre election year, and I'm trying to understand our government beyond all the theatrical trash talk of our law makers; and there's the rub. The book wanders from one anecdotal analogy to the next - my skull is still numb - and there's jargon to define in a pile of details. Yet, I have an interesting collection of notes, and I gained some useful insight, so I prospered from reading this, and that's the point of reading, right? It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, and it will not make you any type of legal expert, but I appreciate what Wehle is aiming at here; don't get distracted by the trash talk.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book for anyone who wants to feel empowered to handle any issue that comes their way!!! It's an easy read and is much more helpful than any other legal "how-to books" I have read. I feel much more confident in assessing and handling problems in my life since utilizing the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseHaven’t finished my copy yet but already have picked up great nuggets of info about how to handle sticky life situations with the care and precision of a lawyer’s mind. I tend to approach problems from emotion and pre-formed opinions. This book helps you approach a problem from all angles without emotional entanglement. Prof Wehle has a special way of writing that helps you understand complicated concepts and apply directly to everyday life. Highly recommend this to everyone!
