Paul Hawken is an author and activist. He has founded successful, ecologically-conscious businesses, and consulted with heads of state and CEOs on economic development, industrial ecology, and environmental policy. He has written seven books including four national bestsellers: The Next Economy, Growing a Business, and The Ecology of Commerce, and Blessed Unrest. The Ecology of Commerce was voted as the #1 college text on business and the environment by professors in 67 business schools. Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution, co-authored with Amory Lovins, has been referred to by several heads of state including President Bill Clinton who called it one of the most important books in the world at that time. He has served on the board of many environmental organizations including Center for Plant Conservation, Shelburne Farms, Trust for Public Land, Conservation International, and National Audubon Society.

As a climate scientist, it’s disheartening to witness world events unfold as they have over the past few decades. The clear and precise warnings we scientists have made about our planet’s changing climate are materializing as predicted. Greenhouse gases are trapping heat in the earth’s atmosphere, producing warmer seasons and an amped-up water cycle.

Warmer air holds more moisture, allowing for higher rates of evaporation and precipitation. Record heat waves, coupled with intense droughts, spark the perfect conditions for massive wildfires. Warming oceans trigger supercharged storms, with greater rainfall and higher storm surges. We can expect a steady rise in extreme weather events in the coming decades, potentially causing countless lost lives and significant financial losses.

Whether we like it or not—whether we choose to “believe” the science or not—the reality of climate change is upon us. It’s affecting everything: not just weather patterns, ecosystems, ice sheets, islands, coastlines, and cities across the planet, but the health, safety, and security of every person alive and the generations to come. Worldwide, we’re seeing related symptoms like the acidification of our oceans, which could devastate coral reefs and marine life, and the changing biochemistry of plants, including staple crops.

We know exactly why this is happening. We’ve known for more than a hundred years.

When we burn fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas), manufacture cement, plow rich soils, and destroy forests, we release heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air. Our cattle, rice fields, landfills, and natural gas operations release methane, warming the planet even more. Other greenhouse gases, including nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases, are seeping out of our agricultural lands, industrial sites, refrigeration systems, and urban areas, compounding the greenhouse effect. It’s important to remember that climate change stems from many sources such as energy production, agriculture, forestry, cement, and chemical manufacturing; thus, the solutions must arise from those same many sources.

Beyond the damage to our planet, climate change threatens to undermine our social fabric and the foundations of democracy. We see the impacts of this in the United States in particular, where key parts of the federal government are denying the science, and are closely aligned with fossil fuel industries. While most people continue to move through their day as if nothing is wrong, others who are aware of the science are fearful, if not in despair. The climate change narrative has become a doom and gloom story, causing people to experience denial, anger, or resignation.

At times, I have been one of those people.

Thanks to Drawdown, I have a different perspective. Paul Hawken and his colleagues have researched and modeled the one hundred most substantive ways we can reverse global warming. These solutions reside in energy, agriculture, forests, industries, buildings, transportation, and more. They also highlight critical social and cultural solutions, such as empowering girls, reducing population growth, and changing our diets and consumption patterns. Together, these solutions not only slow climate change, they can reverse it.

Drawdown goes beyond solar panels and energy-efficient light bulbs to show that the needed solutions are far more diverse than just those associated with clean energy, and that there are many effective means to address global warming. Drawdown illustrates how we can make dramatic strides by reducing the emissions of more exotic greenhouse gases, like refrigerants and black carbon, lowering nitrous oxide emissions from agriculture, cutting methane emissions from cattle production, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions from deforestation. Moreover, Drawdown demonstrates the potential for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through innovative land use practices, regenerative agriculture, and agroforestry.

But, more importantly to me, Drawdown illuminates ways we can overcome the fear, confusion, and apathy surrounding climate change, and take action as individuals, neighborhoods, towns and cities, states, provinces, businesses, investment firms, and non-profits. This book should become the blueprint for building a climate-safe world. By modeling solutions that are hands-on, well understood, and already scaling, Drawdown points to a future where we can reverse global warming and leave a better world for new generations.

We think that our climate future is harsh because news and reports have focused on what will happen if we do not act. Drawdown shows us what we can do. Because of that, I think this is the single most important book ever written about climate change.

This book is a great addition to many public libraries, and for individuals and families engaged in climate activism. Both a technical and artistic accomplishment with one hundred proven ideas for stabilizing carbon dioxide, there should be a wave of parliamentarians who start applying the methods, such as, tropical forest conservation, solar thermal energy, solar photovoltaic, permaculture or perennial crops, geothermal, and electric cars. Each one of these and dozens more are described with three page detailed summaries, charts, and top quality color photos. Coordinating the strategies, like all climate campaigners know, is very difficult. A gasoline tax of twenty five cents per gallon would support electric cars, trains, buses, and local agriculture, with the carbon intensive option of distant agriculture becoming more expensive. On the other hand, any new tax on the middle class and working class means it is usually, but not necessarily, more challenging for people to improve homes with insulation, rooftop solar, and for the same people to eat more plant rich diets. Finally, the is a challenge with rogue nations. If only half or three quarters of the large nations are proactive climate, and nations like India, South Africa, Mexico, and Indonesia are slow with climate progress then short term benefits to the climate will be thwarted. Carbon drawdown is still important since the total amount of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere is what drives global warming, however, the short-term gains we should be seeing from projects like rooftop solar and forest conservation in temperate regions are frequently going to be outweighed by excessive coal use in the Global South and the destruction of the tropical rainforests. Many of the carbon drawdown strategies can buy time for large-scale energy transitions. Just how much time we are buying is uncertain.

Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are an important strategy. Desert areas may have EGS over hundreds and thousands of square miles, in the next five years, if nuclear explosives are used by the US and other leading governments (tactical nuclear weapons used a half mile to one mile underground). The technological proposals in the 1960s for "nuclear plowshares" which were focused on canal construction and mining, can be applied to geothermal energy. The 2030 goal of 50% carbon dioxide reductions set by the IPCC is therefore more feasible than generally understood. Geothermal sources in the lower part of Earth's crust and upper mantle can be accessed far better than with ordinary geothermal wells.

I’ve been telling friends about this breakthrough new book, Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming, edited by Paul Hawken in close collaboration with hundreds of consulting climate scientists, mathematicians and pioneering experts from a broad range of fields. Seldom are heard such encouraging words about climate change reversal these days.

In early July while on a windy walk I started to "hear" a song about Drawdown. First a single phrase came to mind, then a melody. I don't believe an audio recording would pass muster as an Amazon review but I'm posting the below lyrics to the completed song, which is my attempt to distill the book's contents in a way that will interest others in picking it up and reading it. This book is a labor of love for the Earth. It's greatly encouraging me and many other people:

We’ve created a vast vicious circle of CO2 pollution warming oceans, land and air.
We’ve got to break the cycle, get some corporate divorces, and give our Mother Earth a lot more tender loving care.

This is a book that everyone should take the time to read - it provides hope in dealing with the greatest crisis of our time, global warming/climate change. The book compiles research from a large number of reliable sources globally to figure out the impact of 100 strategies on reducing the level of greenhouse gases. The strategies have then been ranked. Interestingly the top strategy is to deal with refrigerants - the HFCs that replaced the ozone damaging CFCs have proved to be particularly potent greenhouse gases. Many of the top strategies relate to food and its production. Knowing the impact that food waste and eating meat have on global warming will encourage many to adjust their feeding habits. Indeed there are many strategies that the average person can adopt without a dramatic change in the way they live. In doing so often there is a savings to be had along the way. I urge you to read this book and talk about it with your family and friends - we all need the conversation now so we can make the changes needed to ensure a healthy planet for future generations.

The authors due not gloss over the potential looming disaster that climate change represents.They do present a granular analysis of the muliple causes of climate change and potential solutions and mitigations. It is informative, empowering and ultimately hopeful. I learned loads and was particularly struck by the many win/win solutions that can reduce emissions, improve biodiversity, improve the lives of poor communities and/or save money over all. Potentially a book to inform the diference any one can make through life style changes, giving money and campaigning. Also a very good book for young adults or students thinking about career and other life choices.
