How lessons from kindergarten can help everyone develop the creative thinking skills needed to thrive in today's society.
In kindergartens these days, children spend more time with math worksheets and phonics flashcards than building blocks and finger paint. Kindergarten is becoming more like the rest of school. In Lifelong Kindergarten, learning expert Mitchel Resnick argues for exactly the opposite: the rest of school (even the rest of life) should be more like kindergarten. To thrive in today's fast-changing world, people of all ages must learn to think and act creatively―and the best way to do that is by focusing more on imagining, creating, playing, sharing, and reflecting, just as children do in traditional kindergartens.
Drawing on experiences from more than thirty years at MIT's Media Lab, Resnick discusses new technologies and strategies for engaging young people in creative learning experiences. He tells stories of how children are programming their own games, stories, and inventions (for example, a diary security system, created by a twelve-year-old girl), and collaborating through remixing, crowdsourcing, and large-scale group projects (such as a Halloween-themed game called Night at Dreary Castle, produced by more than twenty kids scattered around the world). By providing young people with opportunities to work on projects, based on their passions, in collaboration with peers, in a playful spirit, we can help them prepare for a world where creative thinking is more important than ever before.

Review
Mitchel Resnick has long been an inspiration to those of us who study the roots of innovative thinking. Lifelong Kindergarten is not only essential reading for educators trying to cultivate 21st century skills in the classroom; it's also a vital resource for anyone―parents, entrepreneurs, artists―interested in the creative mind at work and at play.

I did not grate it as 5 stars because of all his samples are among Scratch, Clubhouse and Lego. I expect more stories around the world, even around the MIT Lab, such as their studies about Kids interactive with AI technology. I hope his next book will bring us more insight about AI influence on kids education as a lifelong study agent.
Any way, this is a very good book for parents to read.
There are sections titled "In Their Own Voices" which are mini-interviews. I wasn't as impressed by those - I would have preferred to hear more of Resnick's stories about Projects, Passion, Peers and Play from his own experiences.

I met with Mitch Resnick while visiting the MIT Media Lab in October 2008. This inspiring book relates the development of (and children's creative uses of) Scratch, LEGO MINDSTORMS and LEGO WeDo - all of which originated in the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at MIT. This is STEM education at its very best!
This books not only gives the reader tips on how to foster creativity. But it's also filled with inspirational passages -stories about kids around the world who saw an opportunity to change their education, and took it.
Definitely the reading is rewarding. It is a great book!
An investment in interest always pays off with the best knowledge.
Ee need to make the rest of school (indeed, the rest of life) more like kindergarten.
