One of the BEST retellings of Twelfth Night for children!

The illustrations in this book are incredibly lovely. I know there are many "Shakespeare for kids" books out there ~ but rather than purchasing those generic box sets on groupon, etc-- I have taken the time to carefully select only the *best* retellings for our home library, book by book. The retelling that makes it to our home library must be a book that will captivate the imagination with depth of illustration as well as excellent word choice. This book is my "top pick" for the retelling of Twelfth Night!! It's really tooooo bad that it is out of print. I paid a pretty penny to snag a used copy for my home library ~ but entirely worth it to call it our own!

I've never been a fan of Shakespeare, but other than "Macbeth", I really enjoyed reading The Tempest. I liked that The Oxford Shakespeare series provides insight of the play beforehand. It makes struggling students understand more about the themes and characters. The series helped me a lot for my literature class and the assigned essays (I passed my class with an A). It also made me realize how much I can enjoy reading Shakespeare if I take the time to read the plays and their accompanying analyses.

If you are a fan of Shakespeare you will enjoy most of these classical books that he has written. I know a few people have actually had trouble, and in some cases even myself with what was going on in an 'act or scene' but on the left side they break it down in a little note on what is what. It basically acts (the left side) as a study guide on certain things if you get lost, what is what, what is going on, what just happened etc. It takes something that isn't normally used and helps you understand it if you are having some issues.

The book itself came very well packed, the pages were not bent, or the cover. It was well written with no errors that I have ran across, and the text is readable. It is a good size for anyone, though a little smaller then the average book it can still work out just fine. The cover itself is practical but very interesting in itself, and smooth so you won't get anything sticky or annoying to deal with. It is easy to keep track of where you are at so if you have bookmarks or so on use them. Not hard to lose at all, and great condition.

Why Kindle versions of classics?

OK, it's Shakespeare. I have at least three copies lying around, so why buy a Kindle version? First it's inexpensive at $0.99; second, it's easier to find on my Kindle library than to locate a hard copy (I'm a bibliophile); and third I can annotate and highlight it to my heart's content and erase any of the same when I want. Most of the time I use a Kindle version of a classic to easily and rapidly check a quotation, and this is by far the easiest way to do so.

Add to this the fact that I have lent out a lot of copies of my favorites over the years and that more than a few have not yet found their way back yet!

So if you are like me, Kindle is a great inexpensive way to make your favorites library more accessible and instantly available.

Act 2 Scene 3 misprint?

The book's shape overall is just fine but while I was reading, I noticed that the margin titles of the scenes skipped from Act 2 Scene 2 to Act 2 Scene 4. But the actual "chapter" header of where Act 2 Scene 3 should be was correct. Not sure if it's just some book quirk but I thought i should just point it out. Book is eh, I am forced to read it for summer reading purposes so there's that.

Also- the shipping and handling part made the book cover edge a bit skidded so the paperback has a ridge like effect.

Annotations explain the terminology and hidden meanings of the play

Excellent book for an infrequent Shakespeare reader because it includes many of the original lines, but even more explanation in terms of translating that old style of English into contemporary terminology, as well as the content expressed by them. I also liked the end of chapter issue analyses and critical thinking questions; they help deliver a lot of the play's meaning I would have otherwise missed if I only read the original text.

Forgettable, but Great While it Lasts

This is definitely a classic Shakespearean comedy, complete with disguises, intrigue, love, humor, and a lot of fun. In all honesty, I am not generally a big fan of comedies, but this is definitely an example of an exception. Really, it will never be considered Shakespeare's greatest, but the plot, characters, disguise and romantic elements, and even just the thought of how it would even work on stage when it was originally performed, all contribute to a great mix of humor. As to the edition itself, I found it to be greatly helpful in understanding the action in the play. It has a layout which places each page of the play opposite a page of notes, definitions, explanations, and other things needed to understand that page more thoroughly. While I didn't always need it, I was certainly glad to have it whenever I ran into a turn of language that was unfamiliar, and I definitely appreciated the scene-by-scene summaries. Really, if you want to or need to read Shakespeare, an edition such as this is really the way to go, especially until you get more accustomed to it.
