Editorial Reviews

Review

“Timely reading... LeBlanc's short book makes accessible to general readers controversial ideas well-known in (archaeology)... (and) offers a serious critique of both 'rational choice' by our leaders for short-term ends and of environmental neglect in a market economy as leading to disaster.” ―St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“In a provocative and simulating book, Steven LeBlanc places warfare at the center of human existence. He sees it as a constant battle over scarce resources from the earliest days of our history. In so doing, he gives us hope for the future, in a world where we have the potential to feed everyone. He gives us an important contribution to a growing debate over the causes and future of war.” ―Brian Fagan, professor of Anthropology, University of California, Santa Barbara, and author of The Little Ice Age

The truth about men's continuing propensity for war

The truth about men's continuing propensity for war
"Steven LeBlanc’s Constant Battles is an important book, because it thoroughlydebunks two popular fallacies about the evolution and nature of humans. Firstis the belief that early humans lived in harmony with nature, while takingdeliberate steps to conserve local resources. The second is that early and morerecent humans lived in peace with each other. Both of these ideas stem the“Noble Savage” notion first proposed by Jean-Jaques Rousseau."LeBlanc cites an overwhelming amount of evidence to show that both of theseideas are not only wrong, but also dangerous, because they tend to preventpeople from fully realizing the dimension of the threat they pose: There is nohope of fixing a problem unless you first recognize that it exists. Near the endof the book LeBlanc shows that, with such recognition, a path to peace isavailable. In an age of 14,000-mph missiles and swarms of smart drones, thiskind of revelation is vital."Richard E. Evans, author, The Female Imperative
