A Must-Read for History Lovers

A fascinating and beautifully written historical novel and a great read, especially after my recent visit to Naples. The characters and settings are fully fleshed out. Sontag explores the roles played by William Hamilton, English ambassador to the court at Naples and scientific hobbyist (the volcano lover of the title), Admiral Horatio Nelson, and Lady Emma Hamilton, Nelson's lover, in the court's merciless crackdown on early Italian republicans, whose cause went down with Napoleon's defeat in Italy.

I read this book about 20 years ago when it first came out and then decided recently to re-read it. I did so with some trepidation in that many things - books and movies foremost - don't hold up over that period of time. Not so with this book which I esteem even more highly after the second, more mature reading. I recommend this book to anyone interested in not just the historic drama and pageantry of the times, but in the unchanged and unchanging human condition.
