About the author

Lois Duncan (1934-2016) was born in Philadelphia, PA, and grew up in Sarasota, FL.
She knew from early childhood that she wanted to be a writer. She submitted her first story to a magazine at age 10 and became published at 13. Throughout her high school years she wrote regularly for young people's publications, particularly Seventeen.
As an adult, Lois moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she taught magazine writing for the Journalism Department at the University of New Mexico and continued to write for magazines. Over 300 of her articles and stories appeared in such publications as Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, and Reader's Digest, and for many years she was a contributing editor for Woman's Day.
Lois was the author of over 50 books, ranging from children's picture books to poetry to adult non-fiction, but is best known for her young adult suspense novels, which have received Young Readers Awards in 16 states and three foreign countries. In 1992, Lois was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award, presented by the School Library Journal and the ALA Young Adult Library Services Association for "a distinguished body of adolescent literature." In 2009, she received the Katharine Drexel Award, awarded by the Catholic Library Association "to recognize an outstanding contribution by an individual to the growth of high school and young adult librarianship and literature." In 2015 she was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America.
Six of her novels -- SUMMER OF FEAR, KILLING MR. GRIFFIN, GALLOWS HILL, RANSOM, DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU and STRANGER WITH MY FACE -- were made-for-TV movies. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and HOTEL FOR DOGS were box office hits.
Although young people are most familiar with Lois Duncan's fictional suspense novels, adults may know her best as the author of WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, the true story of the murder of Kaitlyn Arquette, the youngest of Lois's five children. Kait's heartbreaking story has been featured on such TV shows as Unsolved Mysteries, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Sally Jessy Raphael and Inside Edition. A full account of the family's on-going personal investigation of this still unsolved homicide can be found on the Internet at http://kaitarquette.arquettes.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2024I loved the twists in the book and seeing things from each of the main characters’ points of view. The story was great and would have made a great movie , too bad Hollywood changed so much of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2022I recently watched the entire TV show I know what you did last summer And I wanted to watch the 3 movies and this was on sale so I just decided to get it. One thing I did find out after reading the end of this book, the movie was not what the author wanted she didn't even know what was being made and she hated it. I have it seen it in years and that's why I want to watch it but now going into it at least I know it's nothing to like. Also Lois edited this book from the original 1970s version. This also isn't like the Amazon Prime TV show that was cancelled.
Four teenagers Julie, Ray, Helen and Barry are All living with a secret that happens the summer before. They made a packed never just speak of it and not go to the police with what they know. Well Summer That secrets coming back to haunt them. Someone has found out what they did leaving messages and stalking them.
Helen is TV star on news station, Julie's going to be going to college, Ray's back from California after running away and Barry's at college now but they aren't safe from what's happening because the person has tracked them down and is making their lives miserable.
There is not the movie or TV show as I said. So no blood bath but I still enjoyed it so much. Julie and Ray were my favorites. I guessed the twist that was near end too. I don't know how but just did. Was perfect ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2022When I noticed this book my first reaction was surprise - I never knew the movie was based on a book. And the book is a lot better than the movie. Overall this is a pretty good book. But… there are a couple problems with it that keep it from true greatness.
First big problem is that this book was obviously written in the 70s and then tweaked to set it more recently. And that has the effect of a movie with obvious dubbed lines inserted into it. Not a fatal flaw but a flaw.
The bigger problem is how it ends. It doesn’t have an ending as much as it just ends. It isn’t as fulfilling as it might have been.
Still, it’s good. Not great but good.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2023I am reading this book with my daughter for her summer reading for school. She doesn't like to read much, but she likes this one. It's very suspenseful and there are lots of plot twists. Much better than the movie!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2022Got this book for a Christmas gift for my Charity Angel Tree kid. Perfect for young/teen readers!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2024If you haven't already, please DO NOT watch the movie. It's really a horrible mockery of a truly great novel. Duncan herself was aghast at it when she saw what they'd done. Experience the story as it was intended by picking up this incredible novel! The book is so well crafted and its ending is COMPLETELY different! If you've already seen the film, my condolences...soothe yourself with the novel.

LuciferReviewed in the United Kingdom on May 14, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Tense and packed full of suspense.
I absolutely loved this. I remember getting goose bumps when I was reaching the end of the story and had figured out what was happening. Tense, full of suspense, I first read this in my mid teens, when I was still waiting for life to happen. The characters all seemed so cool and I would have loved to have been a part of their crowd before the accident. Midnight picnics, teenage romance, cars, beer and smoking pot, it all seemed so exciting and daring. Pretty tame compared to how my latter teenage years turned out! I downloaded the Kindle version recently and although I enjoyed reading it again, I was very disappointed to discover that it had been updated. In my opinion, this never works, the book was written in the seventies and should have been left there. Any reader should be able to appreciate that it was written a long time ago and be able to adjust to that time period for the duration of the book. The film adaptation was quite simply dire and only loosely based on the original story. This story should still appeal to teenagers today and is well worth a read.

I saw the film first and I just realized there was a book so I wanted to read it. I was really surprise: the book is very interesting and it is quite different from the movie. If you enjoy the movie I recomend you to read the book. You will surprise yourself...
