Malice of Crows (The Shadow, 3) Hardcover – October 31, 2017

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 215 ratings

Supernatural creatures create chaos across an unforgiving western landscape in the third book of a propulsive and cinematic fantasy adventure series that began with Wake of Vultures

The Ranger known as Rhett has shut down a terrible enterprise running on the blood of magical folk but failed to catch the dark alchemist behind it. And now the Shadow refuses to let him rest.

Rhett must make the ultimate transformation if he has any hope of stopping the alchemist or fulfilling his destiny; he must become the leader of a new Rangers outpost.

But to save his friends, and the lives of countless others, Rhett will first have to lead the Rangers on a mission more dangerous than anything they've ever faced.

Praise for The Shadow series:

"With this latest entry in The Shadow series, Bowen burnishes her particular brand of Western mythic odyssey to a high shine. Outstanding pacing takes us from one exciting, well-crafted scene to another... Extraordinary. ―

This is a very well written book continuing the Saga of Rhett. I am looking forward to reading the 4th installment of t
    his story and more.

"Malice of Crows" is the third book in a fantasy series with the most inclusive cast of characters imaginable, set in the Old West, of all places. The story is still going strong and interesting and important things happen along a journey to the big conflict, keeping the reader invested. I'm looking forward to the 4th (and final?) book.

Superficially The Shadow is a wild ride of crazy heroes set on saving the world in spite of itself. Ultimately, though, this historical fiction denounces hatred in all its forms but particularly racism. It’s a grand adventure populated by flawed and fantastic characters determined to define themselves in the face of horror and expectations including the horror of expectations. If you don’t like people who are not “normal”, not even pleasant a lot of the time, you need to read this series just because you need to be annoyed out of your comfort zone.

I have enjoyed the character development through out the series. They need to be read in order to fully understand the story line which is a bit different..Even though its a bit disturbing the novel shows us a bit of what it was like to live in the old west and not be white. The problem I have with this book is that it just ended..There is no hint about what happens to any pf the main characters but 1 because he died..I was left with a whats next question that is not answered unless there is another book coming.

I love these books. I admit to being late to the party in regards to this series, but it is soooo good. I devoured the first three just in time for the release of Treason Of Hawks. I love these characters. Delilah writes them so beautifully. A must read for lovers of fantasy.

Continuing story of Rhett Walker and the Rangers as well as Rhett’s grappling with his personal identity. Book 3 does not disappoint!

I loved the whole series of books. There are 4. I bought the first one by accident and never expected to like the book much less fall in love with the series and have to know what happens next.

It’s much the same as the earlier books, so I feel I can copy and paste my review of those. It even follows the same pattern–there’s a whole bunch of traveling, sprinkled with a few battles and a few town visits, until the end where there’s a big climax/ultimate goal fulfilled. The problem is that travel portion. It feels like filler. Like the hurdles they have to jump don’t have to do with the main goal, they don’t have a permanent effect on the characters. Which is not a deal breaker, but it irritates me. Makes me feel like there was no point in reading what I just read. Or that it’s a repetitive cycle, with minimal character development in-between. It’s a quest story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Inverted Mills & Boon with magic

Book 3 of this series shows a marked decline from earlier volumes. It focuses on the romance between Rhett and Sam, both reverting into adolescence. The only mildly amusing aspect here is the gender reversal: The physical male plays the sweet submissive role, the physical female having decided to adopt a male persona But even that is handled poorly.

There's a lot of fairly corny dialogue, seriously grating after a while. But the ending (described as harsh by some reviewers) would actually be quite good - if only it were the actual end, rather than the introduction to the next book.

The magical setting is reminiscent of R.S.Belcher - but anybody expecting similarly interesting reading will be sorely disappointed by this increasingly tedious series.
