This totally did the trick for a seven year old boy who had zero interest in sitting still. He drew for 30 minutes on his first session and his pictures were so cute and he was so proud of himself. Kind of a 70s feel which I thought was cool.

My 8 year old niece is very artistic and loves animals, so I took a chance and bought this, "how to" books as one of her Christmas presents. I let her open it early during a recent trip home, and was pleasantly surprised at her reaction. I was even more surprised when she spent the next few hours drawing many of the animals using the step by step visual instructions. We were amazed at how great the animals looked when she finished drawing them; we were able to identify which animal it was 99% of the time, (impressive for someone new to drawing).
To draw an animal you follow the a row of, "step by step" pictures which built on each other, and end with a completed animal. For example, to draw a fox, first there was a picture of a circle, then an oval attached to the circle for the body, then the long tail, etc ... down to the whiskers. And since the instructions are all pictorial, she could do these entirely on her own. They were easy enough for her to do, but not so simple for her to become bored and lose interest. There were up about 4 animals you could draw per page, so it will take some time for her to draw all of them, (and knowing my niece, she'll then go back to ones she liked best to improve and perfect them).
II bought another "how to" drawing book from a different author as well, (How to Draw Princesses and Other Fairy Tales by
Barbara Soloff Levy) not knowing if she'd like the way one book taught over the other. Upon opening the book I could see that Ed Emberley's book was far superior for beginning artists. My niece apparently agrees, because despite LOVING all things princess, she flipped through the Princesses "how to" book, then put it aside and spent the rest of the day drawing the animals from Ed Emberly's Drawing Book.
I will definitely be buying more Ed Emberley drawing books in the future!

We have gotten other how to draw books but she gets frustrated with them because the steps in between are pretty big difference so it can be hard to follow along. But this book is AMAZING!! I would like to buy more of Ed Emberley's drawing books! They are a great price and fun for the whole family. It also has a large variety of animals in the book also! It is even fun for me to draw with it! My daughter who just turned five can follow along by herself and make her own drawing all by herself, she is so proud of herself and so am I. We have a quiet time in the house when I am laying my younger child down and this book has been great for that!

When raising my children I remember taking/using this book and creating my own drawing strips to illustrate how to follow steps in drawing animals. I would laminate the strips and give them to my children with blank long rectangular pieces of white paper and colored pencils. .The simple steps made it easy for them to follow, and they loved this activity!! I highly recommend this book! My only suggestion would be to make this same book but with a spiral binding so it lays flat and makes it easier for kids to draw without having to hold the book open.

This is a nice wholesome, book for kids to enjoy which provides hundreds of fun, simple drawing templates , in step by step form, for fun depictions of animals, which are a little more caricature than purely realistic.

While at an adult friend's birthday party in a pub not so long back, I noticed someone's 7 year old daughter was engaged very quietly and productively in a drawing book on her own, and thought it would be a good and absorbing book for my own daughter ( who also happens to love animals- perhaps they all do?)

It has that slightly old school, 'sesame street'-ish charm to it which is uncomplicated, lo tech and fun.

Unlike some activity books which get written in, or the stickers used up etc, this book is designed to be copied onto your own paper so has the potential to be used again and again, and become a good 'go-to' book when you need to engage your child in something fun.

She has loved it right from the start so I can only recommend it.
