The Caine Mutiny: A Novel Paperback – April 15, 1992
Purchase options and add-ons
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a perennial favorite of readers young and old, Herman Wouk's masterful World War II drama set aboard a U.S. Navy warship in the Pacific is "a novel of brilliant virtuosity" (Times Literary Supplement).
Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life--and mutiny--on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater was immediately embraced, upon its original publication in 1951, as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of World War II.
In the intervening half century, The Caine Mutiny has sold millions of copies throughout the world, and has achieved the status of a modern classic.

A Classic WWII Novel

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2015Format: KindleVerified Purchase"The Caine Mutiny" is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Herman Wouk. Written in 1950, it tells the story of a fictional mutiny that takes place aboard a decrepit U.S. Navy destroyer- minesweeper during World War II.
This is an outstanding novel in every respect. It tells its story through the eyes of Ensign Willie Keith, a newly minted naval reserve officer who reports aboard the "USS Caine" as his first assignment. The "Caine" is a broken down, World War I vintage "rust-bucket," with a slovenly crew and an outwardly hard-nosed captain, Lt. Commander William DeVriess. Keith and DeVriess take an immediate dislike to each other, and are constantly at odds.
Keith is glad when DeVriess is relieved as ship's captain by Lt. Commander Philip Queeg, who appears at first as an outwardly affable but by-the-book officer. Hopes initially rise that life aboard the "Caine" will get better, but it soon becomes evident that things are going to be much worse under Queeg's command. A series of incidents occur that show Queeg to be an incompetent commander; an overbearing tyrant who browbeats his officers and crew, blames everyone else but himself for his mistakes, displays cowardice under fire, obsesses about petty incidents aboard ship, and displays personality traits that reveal an unstable mind.
Three of the "Caine's" officers - Keith, Lt. Tom Keefer, and the ship's executive officer, Lt. Steve Maryk - all eventually become convinced that Queeg is so mentally unstable that he should be replaced as captain of the "Caine." Maryk and Keefer initially intend to request Queeg's relief from higher headquarters, but back out at the last minute.
Soon after that, the "Caine" finds itself as one of several ships riding out a typhoon in the Pacific. The ship is soon in mortal danger; Queeg issues a series of orders that will only make matters worse for the ship, possibly resulting in its loss with all hands. Maryk countermands Queeg's orders and relieves the captain. Keith and Keefer are present at the time and concur with Maryk's decisions.
I won't give away any more of the story. You'll have to read this outstanding novel to find out what happens to the "Caine" and its officers and crew.
I first read "The Caine Mutiny" when I was still in high school, some forty-plus years ago. I re-read it just a few short weeks ago, and enjoyed it just as much the second time I read it as I did the first. It's one of those good, old-fashioned novels that has a fascinating plot, extremely well-developed characters, and a style of prose that keeps readers engaged throughout its 500-plus pages. Above all, "The Caine Mutiny" book entertains. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI just got done reading The Hope, The Glory and a Hole In Texas by the great author Herman Wouk. All 4 or 5 stars. So I was excited to read the Pulitzer 1952 award book of his The Caine Mutiny.
The 537 page book read well with no boring parts. I read the book in 2 days and could not put it down. Wouk did a masterful job with character development and description of the old rust bucket WW1 type Destroyer/minesweeper USN Caine used in WW2 against the Japanese.
We see a progression of Captains of the Caine starting at a good, fair to the crew Captain who got Caine's assigned jobs done with efficiency. However he allowed much slack of the crew and the Caine to be filthy. Next came a " By the book" disciplinarian Captain who terrorized the crew and INMO was a sick waco. Then we see an intelligent author/ Captain as a good Captain. Finally we see Willie the main character winning a Bronze star( put up for the Navy cross but for his actions against the mentally Ill captain only got the Bronze Star) for helping to save the Caine even after his Author friend Captain had issued an abandon ship after the Caine was violently hit by a Kamikaze plane that exploded on the ship causing a massive fire and destruction. Eventually Willie becomes the Caine's last captain.
There is also a love affair with Willie and his girl. Lots more characters that are described very well. Wouk shows his characters as real human beings with strengths and faults like we all have.
The real sicko was the Lt. Commander Queeg the crazed disciplinarian Captain going by the book and having to have his way at all times. Many times he was at fault and never would acknowledge he was wrong and always got a lower officer or crewman to take the blame for his ineptitude. Lots of discipline. No wonder why he was so hated and called Old Yellowstain for his cowardliness.
We see the XO taking charge of the ship in the middle of a Typhoon and possibly illegal relieving the Captain's command of the ship. There is a Court Marshal for possible Mutiny. Fascinating. I won't ruin the great story for you.
Great ending. I now know why Herman Wouk received a Pulitzer prize in 1952 for this great book The Caine Mutiny. Remember Humphrey Bogart playing the mentally disturbed Captain Queeg massaging the steel balls in his jittery hands. A great classic movie.
Anyone interested in the Navy, small old combat ships and close personal involvement between officers and crewman will enjoy this Pulitzer prize winning book. 5 stars and proudly added to our family library.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHerman Wouk's voice is one that speaks to me in a very natural way. He writes as an adult and insightful man. His books are a pleasure to read and his voice becomes part of my own inner dialog as I go through my days, and that is a welcome addition to my day.
After reading his two great WWII novels, Winds of War and War and Remembrance, I wanted more. It took a long time for this book to be released on Kindle, but once it was available I was glad to read it.
The scale of the telling of the war is smaller and more personal than his other two epics, but very personal and very real. Character is revealed, and people have an evolutionary arc. He manages to show each major character with all their flaws, some of them unredeemed, but always with an understanding of our own human frailty and potential.
It is a very good read, and the themes are timeless, they are the themes of what it is to be human, to face challenges, and to make moral choices to strengthen, or weaken, ones own character.
I recommend this book and his other two great WWII books.

Not a true story but told as if it was.
A fascinating insight into the war era navy.
The story was made into a Holywood film. The film is great. The book is better.

W. R. JongejanReviewed in the Netherlands on December 12, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Best of the best
Herman Wouk is a top author. First book I read is the remembrances of war and I was hooked. The Caine Mutiny keeps you at the point of your chair. But it is also about the phenomenon that people, who are totally incompetent for some functions, somehow succeed in getting that function. You see this everywhere, not only in the Army, but also in companies, banks, administrations, governments and where not. It shows that leading people most times forget to listen to subordinates, because they think they know it all themselves. There is a lesson in this book for every leader or manager: there are more sides to a person than you can see from above.
M ClarkReviewed in Germany on August 31, 20195.0 out of 5 stars A profound look at the challenges of command
Wouk's Caine Mutiny describes the experiences of a WWII crew sailing under a mentally disturbed captain. As such, it is the perfect book to read while thinking about the current Trump Administration. The book is more profound than any normal war story as it describes the challenges of command. This book is highly recommended.
