The Ravenmaster: My Life with the Ravens at the Tower of London Hardcover – October 2, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
The first behind-the-scenes account of life with the legendary ravens at the world’s eeriest monument
The ravens at the Tower of London are of mighty importance: rumor has it that if a raven from the Tower should ever leave, the city will fall.
The title of Ravenmaster, therefore, is a serious title indeed, and after decades of serving the Queen, Yeoman Warder Christopher Skaife took on the added responsibility of caring for the infamous ravens. In The Ravenmaster, he lets us in on his life as he feeds his birds raw meat and biscuits soaked in blood, buys their food at Smithfield Market, and ensures that these unusual, misunderstood, and utterly brilliant corvids are healthy, happy, and ready to captivate the four million tourists who flock to the Tower every year.
A rewarding, intimate, and inspiring partnership has developed between the ravens and their charismatic and charming human, the Ravenmaster, who shares the folklore, history, and superstitions surrounding the ravens and the Tower. Shining a light on the behavior of the birds, their pecking order and social structure, and the tricks they play on us, Skaife shows who the Tower’s true guardians really are―and the result is a compelling and irreverent narrative that will surprise and enchant.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Packed with insight and anecdote, [The Ravenmaster] brings the Tower ravens to vivid life, each bird with a personality of its own. I've been fortunate enough to tour the Tower and meet the ravens a few times in years past; after reading this book, I cannot wait to go back." ―George R.R. Martin
"Skaife . . . is an unending fount of raven lore ― not just myths and stories, but habits, personalities and discoveries he's made over his years on the job." ―Petra Mayer, NPR
"A beguiling, fascinating, and highly amusing account of the strangely magical birds . . . There's joy in The Ravenmaster, as well as tragedy, obsession, and a rare tenderness toward Skaife’s avian charges . . . Skaife is doing us, I think, a small political service by introducing us to the quirks and histories of every bird in his care; he is letting us love them in a way that makes them more than mere symbols . . . Marvelous." ―Helen MacDonald, The Atlantic
"A wonderfully personal account of life with the ravens . . . A natural storyteller, Skaife writes with affection and insight about these powerful, unpredictable and highly intelligent birds." ―PD Smith, The Guardian
"Skaife is a jaunty, top-shelf storyteller. Not only has he got a flair for the basic tower story, and the history and mystery of the ravens, but he can swing off piste, like a jazz improvisation, to fill in the story with scads of local color." ―Peter Lewis, The Boston Globe
“This is an utterly fascinating book about one of those subjects you never thought you’d be interested in until, well, you were . . . Skaife is a very good storyteller . . . A splendid and constantly surprising book.” ―David Pitt, Booklist [starred review]
"The London book of the year . . . A funny and informative account of life with the royal ravens at the Tower of London . . . [Skaife] is a born storyteller." ―Ian Thomson, Evening Standard
"Balancing fascinating tidbits (a raven’s need for order and routine) with macabre details (blood-soaked dog biscuits and ghostly sightings), [Skaife] titillates as he educates, rehabilitating the gloomy reputation of the raven. Skaife’s conversational style and disarming candor make this a rollicking tale fit for nearly any armchair adventurer." ―Publisher's Weekly
"For those seeking the secrets of the Tower of London without actually being imprisoned there, this is just the thing. " ―Kirkus
"A delightful read from a masterful―and very funny―storyteller. Skaife the Ravenmaster knows birds in a way that humans rarely do. He gives us an intimate insider’s view of the seven big, powerful, boisterous ravens who rule his life, who tease him mercilessly and teach him well, who play KerPlunk, who plan and execute elaborate ploys for stealing sandwiches, who guard the Tower of London and its visitors (and only occasionally terrorize them), who are―as he says with characteristic insight―much like us, brave, silly, ruthless, charming, unpredictable, brilliant, lovable, and complex." ―Jennifer Ackerman, author of the New York Times bestselling The Genius of Birds.
"I will never forget the first time I saw Chris Skaife, in full Yeoman Warder regalia, feed one of his beloved ravens a chick carcass. The group of nearby French tourists were horrified, but I looked on in wonder at the sheer size and power of the Tower ravens. Chris adores his birds with every fiber of his being. His knowledge and love for the ravens flies off of the page in The Ravenmaster." ―Caitlin Doughty, author of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
"Skaife is both a raven master and a master storyteller. Compulsively readable―I devoured the book in a single sitting!" ―Lindsey Fitzharris, author of The Butchering Art
"The Ravenmaster will enable the public see ravens not simply as a memorial to days of yore, but every bit as much a part of history as monarchs and politicians. Christopher Skaife's tales contain not only comedy but also tragedy, frustration, love, hubris, fear, foolishness, compassion and uncertainty. Keeping the ravens requires constant negotiation with them, in which, as Skaife repeatedly observes, we learn not only about corvids but also our own role as human beings." ―Boria Sax, author of The City of Ravens

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2025My e-library also had the audio version of this book which was not only great to hear read by Chris Skaife himself as if he's giving you a private tour, but the ravens can also be heard as well as if they know he's talking about them! Also a bit of music Chris may be performing as the military drummer he describes being. It was great reading about the life of a modern British male who loves his career, family, favorite 'hobby' and who is not a rock star or overblown media personality, i.e., a real person - and in his own accented voice! One of those gifted storytellers you can listen to for hours, and I did, right after reading the book! Highly recommend both versions! Loved the pictures too, tho the raven's names should've been included with the captions. Thanks Chris, great job! 👉💕👈
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2018Skaife's memoir is structured around his day as Ravenmaster, but takes us back to his childhood, to his military years, and to his apprenticeship, as well as looking forward to the future of the Tower and his beloved ravens. While he admits to being neither a scientist nor an ornithologist, this Ravenmaster is well-read on the topic of what he calls "ravenology," and he has many years' experience working directly with his wards. This has given him a vault of knowledge, but one he can relate to us without the impenetrable jargon that a more scientifically oriented writer might present. Skaife's storytelling style is aimed at us regular folk, not for a peer-reviewed journal, and so with clear language and a lot of good humor, he guides us through his day, and through his life.
Ravens are exceedingly intelligent and, as anyone who's had a particularly smart dog or cat can tell you, that can be a problem. Intelligence begets curiosity, which begets experiment, which often begets unexpected results. Skaife has endeavored to let his ravens be ravens: he does not teach them tricks or to mimic the human voice, he encourages them to bond in pairs rather than bonding to humans, and as mentioned he takes a minimalist approach to trimming their feathers which not only keeps them healthier but keeps them safer as they are able to fly away from the foxes that prowl the grounds at night, and also glide down from heights they may have reached (the Tower is over 150 feet high in places).
Sprinkled throughout the book are historical tidbits about the Tower, the ravens, and London in general, but by far the most interesting to me were his observations about the seven ravens he cares for, their personalities, and their complex social interactions. Their moods and habits show a mirror to our own human nature. Ravens hold grudges, play tricks, grieve loss, bond tightly, and have definite individual likes and dislikes. They are fascinating creatures wreathed in myth and legend, revered and feared the world over, and Skaife shows us, through anecdote and example, why that is.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2019This got a rave review in the Washington Post, and I can see why. It's author is a good natured, self-deprecating guy who enlisted in the British army at age 16 after getting into various scrapes with the local authorities. The army, with its rigid rules but ample opportunities for risk taking, turned out to be a perfect fit. (My guess is that he had undiagnosed ADHD)
When he retired he applied for one of the coveted positions as a Beefeater at the Tower of London and was subsequently put in charge of these extremely smart and very valuable birds. His boundless curiosity and goodhearted attitude toward life and the natural world make this a joy to read. Definitely suitable for US readers too.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2018I just can't get enough of this book. After visiting the Tower recently and having the opportunity to observe these amazing birds up close (and even having a very brief conversation with one named Jubilee), I was left with many questions about them and about what it's like to be the one person in the world with the title of Ravenmaster. It's a very interesting job, because although it sounds like a lot of fun on the surface, it carries with it some huge responsibilities. Not the least of which is that the Ravenmaster is responsible for the survival of Britain itself: "If the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it.” And if this happens, guess who answers not only to all British citizens but to the Queen herself? Can you imagine the pressure?
Ravenmaster Chris Skaife's beautiful and witty writing style brings his experiences with the ravens to life so vividly that I felt like I was following him around and getting to know the ravens myself. He also shares some harrowing adventures that are both engaging and terrifying, and many light moments that made me smile and made people around me wonder why I was laughing to myself. At the same time, I learned a little more about ravens and about the Tower of London, so no complaints there. This was definitely a worthwhile purchase. Highly recommended!

C. BenedictReviewed in Germany on June 23, 20225.0 out of 5 stars Ein lustiges kurzweiliges Informatives und ehrliches Buch

Absolutely delightful insight on the life of the Ravenmaster and all the ravens of the Tower of London. Written with wit, humor and charm, you read it like a novel and become truly involved with the life of the ravens. Truly recommended.

I have visited the Tower several times and loved Chris Skaife’s story telling ability. The balance between his experience, the history of the tower and the care of the ravens makes this a nice read. I’ve seen one of the raven’s steal a school boy’s lunch and hop away with it across the grass to unwrap and eat his sandwich!
Dr Samantha SmithReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 14, 20185.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful quirky heart-warming book
Chris Skaife has one of the most unusual jobs in the world - he is the Ravenmaster of the Tower of London, looking after the Queen's ravens within an iconic setting. Much has been written about the Tower over the years but little has been said about the ravens themselves and yet they are one of the main things the tourists ask about when they visit - in particular the mysterious legend of why there has to be at least six ravens. Ravens aren't something you immediately equate with London! Finally we have a rather glorious book on the subject and the ravens finally take centre stage which will in fact please them very much. Skaife interweaves the story of the ravens with his own story and this gives it another dimension as we learn how he becomes not just a soldier but then a yeoman warder and then finally the Ravenmaster - a wondrous title if ever there was one! We learn how his army days help him with regard to looking up these rather fascinating if not always easy birds. Ravens are not pets and Skaife is keen to emphasis this. He likes to keep them as wild and as individual as a raven should be. If one of the ravens, Erin in this case, doesn't like him it is not as one reviewer has suggested here because he is cruel to them but because ravens take slight at the most innocuous things and they remember! In the book it is obvious how much he loves the birds and how their care comes first - in fact he misses a wedding anniversary meal with his wife because of one. Anyone who has read the book's ending with its touching tribute to Munin, who died of old age just as Skaife was finishing the book, would see that the book is a work of love just as Skaife's job is. Chris Skaife is passionate about these rather mad, bad and dangerous to know birds and he allows each bird to take centre stage although Merlina surely deserves a book to herself even if it is just a photo book of all the fabulous photos the author has posted over the past few years on his popular social media accounts. A fabulous read and about time! More please!
