Great Book, Very Absurdist
This book is for people who like flash fiction, short stories, and the disturbing things people like to ignore. It's very detailed and vivid. Those who don't like feeling uncomfortable while they read will not enjoy this. If you're a fan of Chuck Palahnuik, you'll love Amelia Gray. She writes in the abstract, the absurd, and the grotesque. But I found that a lot of the stories left me thinking about my life or life in general from a new perspective. Give it a chance if you like weird.

A young woman, slated to be maid of honor at her best friend's wedding, sees in the mirror a huge pimple on her cheek. She is about to squeeze it when a voice cries out to STOP. It is the ghost of her deceased mother, now inhabiting the pimple. The voice continues to hector, belittle and judge her through the rest of the short, short story. It is absolutely hilarious. Gray's collections, like Museum of the Weird, are uneven for me so far as the appeals of the central conceits, and thus silly to accord stars (Do I make an average of their appeals for me? Or ask whether I'm very happy I read them?), but the best make the purchase of the quickly read collections more than worth the effort. True literary imagination is a rarity, after all, and though Gray often recalls Kafka, she is an original, one of a kind, stylistically virtuosic on occasion and well in command of her very economical craft. For me, a real find.

Many of the stories here are very short, flash fiction. The writer, Amelia Gray, has an engaging voice throughout, an odd way of viewing the world as expressed in these stories, a view that is surprising, dark, funny, grotesque, and lovely. The juxtaposition of being repulsed and laughing worked effectively to draw me into these stories. If you like reading the weird, like reading dark stories and want to discover a fresh voice, give this collection a shot. A gutshot. I loved it. Maybe you will too.

This is a VERY short collection of VERY strange short stories, and I can't be sure whether I liked it as a whole, or hated it.
Probably a bit of both, since the stories vary in quality.
Each story starts out pretty conventionally, then things get progressively weirder, ending in a "zinger."
I haven't read any of her other stuff, so can't comment on whether this is her her usual style.
If there's a "peek" option, try it to see if you like it.

This was a very disturbing collection of stories. Each one made me feel like I needed to take a mental bath after reading it. Couldn't finish it. They sound like the thoughts of someone who needs serious psychiatric help. So sorry I wasted my money. Threw it away, and I am a serious book lover.

I love everything I get to read by Gray, but the power in these stories turns that love into a hushed awe of reverence. The imagination and strangeness I hope for from Gray is amply there, but these stories are so much more unsettling than I expected, wilder. It's almost dangerous, because I get the feeling that I can't be entirely sure that the stories mean me well. More than just stunned, I was shaken. Shaken thoroughly enough that I'd have trouble explaining. It was wonderful.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Meaning, No Ending
Reviewed in Canada on June 18, 2015
These very, very short stories have absolutely no meaning to me. The story, about a woman who came to rent a room, then they put her in the air conditioning unit, where she crawled around and lived - makes no sense to me. And that one isn't the only one. Some of the stories are only 3 - 4 pages long - not what I even would consider a "short story", and most of them have no conclusion to the story. Waste of money.
