Purchase options and add-ons

A superpowered sequel to Matthew Cody’s popular debut novel, Powerless!

Daniel Corrigan is as regular as can be, especially when compared to the Supers: kids in his new hometown with actual powers like flight and super-strength. But Daniel’s not powerless. Only he was able to stop the Shroud, a supervillain bent on stealing his newfound friends’ powers. And thanks to him, his friends got to keep those powers.

Now Daniel himself is starting to display powers, while at the same time his friends are losing theirs. His friend Eric thinks Daniel is just becoming a Super himself, a late-blooming one. But Daniel worries there may be something more sinister at work, since his power-stealing ability is uncomfortably like the Shroud’s. Of course, the Shroud is gone now . . . isn't he? Or could Daniel himself be his new vessel?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-7-Daniel Corrigan, introduced in Powerless (Knopf, 2009), continues in his struggle to be an ordinary 13-year-old kid surrounded by superpowered friends. Months after defeating their evil adversary Herman Plunkett, aka the Shroud, Daniel and company are surprised to learn that the elderly Plunkett had relatives who have decided to move to town. Most notable is teenaged Theo, who suspects that there is a mystery to be solved in the town of Noble's Green, and his determined questions threaten to expose the supertweens. Meanwhile, a new group of sinister beings dubbed Shades is attacking the Supers, and it is up to Daniel to once again save the day. But as he has begun exhibiting the ability to temporarily steal his friends' powers, does he really need to protect them from himself? Familiarity with the first title is a must to follow the events in Super and to understand why the group of friends is willing to put their faith in Daniel. Readers will likely forgive any hiccups in the story's logic as the fast-paced action and engaging characters drive the narration to a conclusion that certainly seems to indicate that there will be more to come.-Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, ILα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

How can you be a hero when you’re ordinary? In this follow-up to Powerless (2009), it is still up to the superpowerless Daniel to destroy all remnants of the meteorite from the Witch Fire comet that brought the town’s inhabitants their unique capacities. To complicate matters before the final battle with Herman Plunkett and his host of shrouds, Daniel’s episodes of stealing others’ powers suggest that he may actually be Plunkett’s heir. A series of minor skirmishes lead to a climax that seems to wrap up the story, yet still leaves room for further adventures. A satisfying sequel. Grades 5-8. --Kathleen Isaacs

I was born and raised just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. I was the baby of the family and when I wasn’t dodging the tortures of three older siblings, I was making up stories to try and entertain whoever else would listen to me.

After graduating high school a solidly average student, I studied theater and creative writing in college and went on to get a graduate degree where I focused on Shakespeare. I came to New York in 1999 and for several years worked in theaters there and around the country. When I wasn’t working on plays, I tried my hand at short stories and even a few comic book scripts.

I began teaching English in 2004 and started work on my first novel, Powerless, around the same time. As a life-long fan of comic books and pulp stories, those influences began to pop up in my work more and more.

To this day I can be found in my local comic book shop every Wednesday (that’s the day the new comics come out, for those of you not in-the-know!) and the bookshelves in our house are stuffed with the works of old-time adventure writers like Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber and Clarke Ashton Smith. If you haven’t already, I recommend you head over to the library and check them out. It’s great stuff!

My wife Alisha and I are still here in New York, with our young son Willem. I’m currently hard at work on my next novel for Knopf, which is has yet to get a title (but for a hint as to what it’s about, just take another peek at that list of writers in the above paragraph!) Most days I divide my time between writing and teaching and being a generally nice family man.

If you see me in the comic shop, say hi.

This is a fun series for my middle school students. Not your typical superhero story but as a comic book superhero lover, I can say it is definitely as good as any of the classics. This is the second of the powerless series and I thought that it would just be more of the same. It wasn't. Pleasant surprise with the satisfying ending and a lot of fun.

This book was very popular in my 5th grade classroom this year. Both boys and girls enjoyed reading about the group who had super powers while trying to figure out the mystery of who was trying to steal their powers away.
