Very well written mystery with great atmosphere, clever plot, and a satisfying conclusion. I liked a lot of the characters, especially Markby, but I didn't like chip-on-my-shoulder Mitchell, the main character. That, along with the fact that it started out pretty slow-going, was why I couldn't give it a five star rating -- and neither am I much motivated to continue with the series at this point because I got to like the main character to some degree. But I would recommend it for all its many good points as listed above.

Accident or Murder at the Boxing Day Hunt

A Season For Murder is the 2nd book in the Meredith and Markby Mystery series. It is Christmas time and Meredith has returned to England from her embassy service abroad. She rents a cottage from her relatives in Pook's Common in the Cotwolds. It is an isolated location but Meredith strikes up a friendship with a neighbor. Soon the new friendship ends, as Harriet dies after falling off a horse at the Boxing Day Hunt. Harriet was acting out of character before the fall so was it an unfortunate accident or murder? Alan Markby lives in the area so he and Meredith are reunited in detecting the mystery.

I thought I would enjoy the mystery more than I did. It moved slowly for me and didn't hold my interest as the first book in the series did. I don't care for Meredith that much at this point. She seems rather abrasive at times. Meredith,also, seems impulsive in her relationship with Markby and with how quickly she strongly related to Harriet who she just met. Impulsiveness and abrasiveness don't seem like desirable personality traits of an embassy diplomat. However, I do like English mysteries and liked the location of Cotswolds. Since I did like the first book in the series and it apparently was a long running popular series, I will try the 3rd book Cold in the Earth.

Meredith is back in England

And smack in the middle of another death which could be murder. Meredith has been posted to the London office, and is renting a small cottage in the countryside. Even though Pook's Common looks quiet and sleepy, there are more things going on than Meredith is prepared for. She and Alan are on the trail of a murderer again. I really do enjoy this series, and this second book leaves me panting for more about Meredith and Alan. Ms. Granger is a very good writer. I like her characterizations, and she keeps the plot moving along at a good pace. I am also curious to see what happens between Meredith and Alan.

However, the book centres around the Christmas season and Meredith's meeting of a neighbour who she has become friends with. The lady dies on Boxing Day, and everyone is saying the same thing. She never took tablets, so why were tablets in her system. Then shortly after New Year another murder what is going on? Can Markby find the murderer before he murders again? This time closer to home.

This is the second book in this low key and well written crime series featuring Chief Inspector Alan Markby and diplomat Meredith Mitchell. In this book Meredith returns to Bamford when she has finished her spell abroad as consul. She hopes to be able commute from there to London every day.

During her first few days in her rented cottage she meets a neighbour - Harriet Needham and likes her. Unfortunately before Meredith can get to know her she is involved in a fatal accident at a Boxing Day Hunt. But was it in accident or perhaps something more sinister? Both Meredith and Alan believe it to have been murder and both set out to investigate in their own ways.

This is an interesting mystery with plenty of clues and plenty of red herrings. I certainly didn't work out who was responsible though the clues are there. It is interesting how the author is developing the relationship between the two main characters and I think this is a series which needs to be read in order so that the reader can follow this development.

I love mystery series and this is a great one. The plot is well crafted and the characters are extremely believable. I love that the male and female lead characters aren't just falling into each other's arms - makes for some intrigue! My main issue is the dialogue used. It's just that the language the author uses is really not representative of how people speak or have spoken since probably the other 1950's and this makes the books difficult to read as I struggle to believe anybody says things like 'botheration' (or similar) any more - even back in the 80s or 90s. Not sure either why characters are made to sound like old country bumpkins - I think it's a shame that writers do this as my mind is trying to find a voice based on the character's description and the written 'bumpkin' dialogue trends to fight with that.
